Massachusetts teen convicted of homicide in texting-while-driving case

A Massachusetts teen was convicted Wednesday of homicide as a result of texting while driving and will serve one year in prison.
In a landmark case for the state, Aaron Deveau, 18, was found guilty on charges of vehicular homicide, texting while driving and negligent operation of a motor vehicle in a 2011 crash that fatally injured Donald Bowley, 55, of Danville, New Hampshire, and seriously injured a passenger in Bowley's car.

"I made a mistake," Deveau said Wednesday after his mother told the court he would not intentionally hurt anyone. "If I could take it back, I would take it back."

Judge Stephen Abany sentenced the teen to two and a half years on the vehicular homicide charge and two years on the texting and causing injury charge. He will serve one year concurrently on both charges and the balance of both charges is suspended for five years. His license will be suspended for 15 years.

"There are no winners today," Essex County District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett said in a statement. "A beloved grandfather is dead. A once active woman can no longer work and is still racked with pain from her injuries and a young man is going to jail. When we get behind the wheel of a car, we are obligated to drive with care. ... As we saw in this case, in a split second, many lives are forever changed."

as horrible as this is, far left wing nut cases who create thousands of gun posts/threads, will never address this.

death is horrible. what this kid did was absolutely wrong. doesn't mean we should ban cell phones. i'm ok with the cali ban on cell phones while driving, unless, it is hands free.

how about that. what once was a right, but now considered a 'privilege' that requires someone obtain a license so that people FEEL safer about others on the road, didn't change a fucking thing because of an idiot.

The progblem is it is not just one idiot texting while driving.
no kidding, but nearly all those idiots texting and driving still have the license which is supposed to render them 'safe'. thus my point, that requiring a license to exercise an activity, be it right or privilege, is no guarantee of anything.

I have a question. Why was a poor driver given a license? Perhaps that's the problem, not the phone.

The driving test is a test of skills and knowledge of rules of the road.
It does not test your doing stupid stuff.
Speeding
Drinking and driving.
Texting and driving.
Baking a cake and driving.
etc.

If you cannot text and drive, how can you adjust the radio and drive? How can you check your blind spots? If you cannot do those things, you cannot drive. Take the bus or get a more capable friend to transport you.

If you think you can safely text and drive you are stupit.

I know for a fact people can. Just like I know for a fact I can drive SAFELY at 90mph. My reaction time and attention to the road are good enough for both those tasks seperately, but not at the same time. I know that, and all my other limitations. So how do you think I act on the road? Within my personal limitations. That's how people get fucked up, because they assume they can do something beyond their capabilities.

wow.....before this I didn't actually think it was possible that irony could drip.....

People who think they are special snowflakes who can text while driving and still drive teh awesome! often also believe they drive totally awesome, even better! when they have been drinking.

I just always hope when they go they don't take anyone with them. There's nothing you can do about them except enforce the laws and hope they wrack up enough tickets to get them off the road.

I think I just got a strong clue as to C'Thulhu's age group.

One who has not yet realized that they are but mortal.

May you live long enough to gain that wisdom, and not cause anyone else to pass becuase of your ignorance.
