All this acclamation for Veterns, especially today, is beautiful,

pure tokenism, the "thank you" refrain rings hollow, equivalent to wishing someone "happy new year," everyone says it cause what else are you going say.

America doesn't care about Veterns, if it did, the VA wouldn't be the national embarassment it has been for five decades, every year would be the Class of 46. Laying wreaths and giving speeches is easy, actually doing something is difficult

What would you like to see done to the VA?

Is it just me, or is the motivation for a thread that is ostensibly about caring for veterans (but is probably about bashing Trump) just a tad suspect if the OP spells "veterans" Veterns?

Thank you? ... when it comes to military budgets, U.S. soldiers can always expect a big "Fuck you", from the Democrats.

I didn't serve and I haven't had to use the VA so I can't speak from experience but are the issues strictly a matter of money? And do democratic budgets cut VA money compared to Republican?

Because if the VA has had problems for decades that would entail both political parties being in charge and not bettering it

Yea, the phrase has become a bit hollow as the newer generation begin to forget. Many of us have vowed to "never forget", but I am afraid that society is forgetting at a rapid pace. I do everything I can to pass important history on to the younger generations, but I also make it a point to live the life that so many paid the ultimate price for. Live free, or die!

I suspect that it is more difficult for people to appreciate what we have in this country, if they have not served and seen what we have in person. Few Americans have been in hostile fire zones, or had to face Muslims in their natural habitat, which is probably part of why the phrase has less meaning. I also suspect that MSM has made a pretty solid impact as they impose their agenda on the unsuspecting younger generations. Out of sight, out of mind, right?

I can't speak specifically regarding the VA.

The Democrats controlled the House from 1952 until 1994 ... more than 4 decades. When it comes to the military budget, the Democrats say "fuck you" to U.S. soldiers as if it's an automatic reflex.

It doesn’t ring hollow with some of us.

Seems to me that Trump already started addressing the issue, which the OP probably knows full well.

Trump signed into law a bill to reform and speed up the appeals process on disability ratings at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Trump praised the Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act of 2017 that he said would enable veterans "to get decisions in a fraction of the time."

More than 470,000 veterans currently are awaiting appeals decisions on their disability ratings as they seek improved benefits. Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David Shulkin, who stood next to Trump as he signed the bill, has said that some appeals cases can take as long as six years to process.

Following the signing, Trump handed the pen to Charles E. Schmidt, national commander of the 2.2 million-member American Legion. He handed a folder with a copy of the bill to Medal of Honor recipient Donald E. Ballard.

As a Navy Hospital Corpsman 2nd Class, "Doc" Ballard threw himself on a grenade in Vietnam on May 16, 1968, to save a wounded Marine he was aiding and four other Marines. Realizing the grenade had not gone off, Ballard then threw it at the enemy before it exploded and went back to tending the wounded.

Trump congratulated American Legion members and their leaders who "pressed so hard for that legislation." He also praised their lobbying skills. "They have a lot of power, and they use it well," he said.

In addition to the Legion, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW), Vietnam Veterans of America (VVA), Disabled American Veterans (DAV), Paralyzed Veterans of America (PVA) and AMVETS supported and advocated for the passage of the legislation, the White House said.

The VA currently provides about $63.7 billion in compensation annually to about 4.1 million veterans living with service-connected disabling conditions.

"No longer will veterans be kept waiting for years to get an answer to their appeals," Trump said. "They will receive timely updates and they will get decisions much more quickly in a fraction of the time."

The bill was passed unanimously in the House and Senate

Now, wouldn't you expect someone with a genuine concern for veterans to know about this already?

To fix the VA is more than just "it's Democrats fault, it's Republican's fault". Has anything changed in the last 23 years (for the better)? What are we (Republicans) proposing now? The status quo with more money?

Here's something else that the phony veterans' advocate didn't know - or didn't want you to know:

President Trump took one of his first steps to address chronic problems in the Department of Veterans Affairs by signing a bill that extends stopgap services for veterans to go outside the VA medical system for care.

After campaigning on the issue of improving substandard care for veterans that dogged President Obama, Trump signed a reauthorization of the Veterans Access, Choice and Accountability Act. “The veterans have poured out their sweat and blood and tears for this country, and it’s time that they are recognized. It’s time that we now take care of them, and take care of them properly,” Trump said.

The Choice program was set to expire in August without the legislation and with nearly $1 billion unspent in the account. Congress developed the program after a scandal erupted in 2014 during the Obama administration over wait times at the VA medical center in Phoenix, where dozens of veterans died waiting for care.

The VA is better than now than it was under Obama....Rome wasn't built in a day.

Like I said I didn't serve so I can't speak all that deeply to all the issues it has (I mean I've read about it but just not something I'm real familiar with). I've heard the arguments for privatizing it. I'm just trying to better understand what changes have been or what changes people would like to see be made. For instance did Bush/Cheney do anything to improve it during their tenure?
