Afghan mineral wealth could top $1 trillion: Pentagon

I remember when it was revealed that the Shrub was meeting with Taliban leaders prior to 9/11....it was to firm up construction deals for the proposed Caspian Sea oil pipeline. I remember shaking my head at the sheer hypocrisy of publically criticizing the repressive regime of the Taliban in light of this "business is business" action.
Then 9/11 happened, and the Taliban became blood tied to Al Qaeda...nuff said.
But now, it seems that in conjunction with the border problems with Pakistan, the corruption ridden gov't of Karzai, and the constant tide of Taliban/Al Qaeda, Afghanistan now has a new problem......natural resources that would be a boon to our industry---especially in the technological field.
So, does Afghanistan now become yet another historical victim of industrial/corporate imperialism from Europe, the East and the West, with a puppet gov't? Or can it be done right so that ALL the Afghani benefit, and that the land is not poisoned by traditional mining operations?
Or does all hell break loose?
Time will tell.
