Afghan mineral wealth could top $1 trillion: Pentagon

I remember when it was revealed that the Shrub was meeting with Taliban leaders prior to 9/11....it was to firm up construction deals for the proposed Caspian Sea oil pipeline. I remember shaking my head at the sheer hypocrisy of publically criticizing the repressive regime of the Taliban in light of this "business is business" action.

Then 9/11 happened, and the Taliban became blood tied to Al Qaeda...nuff said.

But now, it seems that in conjunction with the border problems with Pakistan, the corruption ridden gov't of Karzai, and the constant tide of Taliban/Al Qaeda, Afghanistan now has a new problem......natural resources that would be a boon to our industry---especially in the technological field.

So, does Afghanistan now become yet another historical victim of industrial/corporate imperialism from Europe, the East and the West, with a puppet gov't? Or can it be done right so that ALL the Afghani benefit, and that the land is not poisoned by traditional mining operations?

Or does all hell break loose?

Time will tell.

and it turns out that they happen to have a trillion in mineral reserves especially the lucrative lithium!!!

I remember despising that our government gave money to a "regime" that would destroy historical relics built long ago to commemorate the passage of The Buddha through Afghanistan...

I remember that too.

And things will more than likely go back to the way they were when we are gone.

It also doesn't do Afghanistan any good that its stuck bordering Pakistan, which is nothing but trouble, and has always supported a Taliban regime.

Not if mining industry sets up there. The closest they'll ever come is something like Saudi Arabia.

I understand your point, but I really think that a theocracy will play on the small minds overthere. We should have done things a little different.

I was horrified that nothing could be done to stop the destruction, in spite of worldwide outcry.

Yep, and most America wasn't aware or didn't care until Michael Moore highlighted the vid of the former Taliban gov't reps being wined and dined by the Shrub & company.

And now there's talk of letting the Taliban leadership having a place at the table of the Afghanistani version of congress! :(

Man, I thank God everyday for liv'in in the USA!

Maybe not.....remember, it was our gov't and CIA that armed and trained these jokers to fight the Soviets...and then didn't follow up with the Afghani people with rebuilding their infra-structure after the Soviets gave up defeated. As former gov't rep Charlie Wilson said, "We won the war, but fucked up the peace".

Maybe this time, we'll get it right.
