The angel said to them, Do not be afraid...
In my neighborhood there is a tradition where on Christmas Eve we line the streets with candles in bags. It is pretty and makes for a nice effect.
Usually one neighbor takes on the task of buying all the bags and candles and distributing them around their street. They usually include an envelope so that you can put five bucks in and mail it back to defray the costs.
This year, the bags came with a very nice Christmas card reciting Luke 2: 10-21.
"The angle said to them,
"Do not be afraid;
for behold, I proclaim to you
good news of great joy
that will be
for all the people.
For today in the city of David
a savior has been born
for you who is Messiah and Lord."
This particular neighbor hoists a HUGE cross in his from his front yard at Easter, and a huge manger scene in December.
This morning I walked over to his house with the envilope filled with $5. I rang his doorbell and nobody answered. I placed the enviolope into his mailbox and began to walk down his driveway to the street. A large white BMW began to pull in from the street, it stopped, the driver looked at me, then the car lunged at me. I had to jump out of the way into the bushes. I looked around and the man with an angry look on his face rolled down his window, I explained that I just deposited $5 into his mailbox for the candles. I told him merry Christmas and walked home.
I was shocked, the man had tried to kill me.
I was wondering if maybe I was overreacting, maybe his foot had slipped or I just thought the BMW lunged at me.
About an hour later the doorbell rang and it was the man. He apologised for having "run at me" with his car, that he gets scared people might be trying to rob him. I accepted his apology and told him Merry Christmas.
I have been reflecting on this story...
I am sure this guy has a gun. If the political signs he posts in his lawn every election are any indication, Im willing to bet he plans on voting Trump.
He just sent me a card about not being afraid, but was willing to kill me over the perceved threat that I might have taken some of his material belongings on Christmas EVE...
Its a sad state of affairs for many Conservative White Christians this American Christmas Eve.
