Some interesting statistics in this article. I am in no way suggesting or would support the government to force individuals to get married because they have children but from a societal perspective these numbers are pretty striking.

About Half of Kids With Single Moms Live in Poverty

Children raised in single-parent households in the U.S. are far more likely to live in poverty than children with both parents present, according to Census figures released Monday. As a result, far more black and Hispanic children are raised in poverty than white kids.

Among all children living only with their mother, nearly half — or 45% — live below the poverty line, the Census Bureau said. For those living with just the father, about 21% lived in poverty. By comparison, only about 13% of children with both parents present in the household live below the poverty line.

The latest data, offering a broad snapshot of America’s households, is the latest to show that children of single parents often have a rougher time financially than those with both parents, a scenario encountered far more by blacks and Hispanics than by whites. About 55% of black children and 31% of Hispanic children live with one parent, compared to 20% of white children and 13% of Asian children.

Other new data released in the report:

– One in four women raising children are doing it on their own. Women are far more likely to be single parents than men, the figures show. Two-thirds, or 67%, of mothers living with their children have a spouse present, compared with 86% of fathers living with their children. One in four mothers with a child under age 18 has no partner present, compared with 6% of fathers.

– The share of so-called family households — in which at least two occupants are related by blood, marriage or adoption — has fallen sharply in recent decades. This year, roughly two-thirds, or 66%, of households were family households, down from 81% in 1970.

–The share of households that are married couples with children has declined by about half, to 19% this year versus 40% in 1970.

– Households also are becoming smaller. On average, 2.5 people share a household currently, compared to 3.1 people in 1970. That’s in part because families are having fewer children. Average children per family fell to 0.9 from 1.3 during that period.

Yes, and the democrat party likes it that way because single women are more likely to vote for the democrat party and married women are more likely to vote for the republican party.

It is no accident that democrat party policies foster/enable/encourage single motherhood. The dominant media culture encourages it as well. Hey, look at Rosey Odonnell and Madonna raising these kids without a man, you can do it too, just forget that you have their millions for hired help. Turn to the gobblement which will forcibly take money from your fellow citizens to fund your chosen lifestyle and call it compassion.

Unfortunately you didn't thread ban Desh and she will come on here and crapflood the thread with her nonsense that you hate women, the poor and blacks.

But, the fact remains the democrat party wants more single women.

What is funny to me is how many Republicans quickly forget that poverty in the US is mostly a relative definition or based on comparisons. Usually they will not forget to tell you that poor people today all have hot tubs, tvs in their bathrooms and a Benz. But as soon as there is an opportunity to use the data to attack women who dare to live without a man...

This really should not be a partisan issue, but what party is promoting single motherhood? The one that would deny many women the right to marry and force others to become mothers.

MORE WHITE CHILDREN IN LOW-INCOME FAMILIES THAN ANY OTHER RACIAL GROUP

Where did I say anything about political party's? You're the one joining ILA in making it political. And what political party is denying women the right to marry the father of their child?

There was a similar survey conducted in the UK recently and it came up with very much the same conclusions, that male children especially need a positive male role model.

Do you have something to advocate? Your source compares the numbers to 1970 for effect. We have raised two generations since then. It's mainly a problem for the individuals that choose it and I don't see that there is much we can do about it.

I did not say anything about marrying the father. There is no reason to believe that will affect their class. Marriage sure.

In general yes I think it is better for a child to grow up in a home with a mother and father. I think the data bears out why that is advantageous. But I said nothing about any policy measures I would push to achieve that or that policy should push to achieve that. I didn't say anything political. I posted the article because reading those numbers jumped out at me and I thought it would be an interesting topic of discussion.

It's old news. Like I said, we have raised two generations since divorce rates went through the roof in the 70s. Further, these numbers always imply that marriage is the solution when it seems likely that there are joint causes and quite possible that the cause and effect are reversed.

Most of this has been widely publicized. Women make less money than men, and men are terrible at paying child support especially if they divorced their first wife and married a trophy. Most trophy's get very agitated when they realize that their income if they work is also factored in to the amount the husband can now afford for child support. They then don't want the husband to have to pay child support. State's are typically lax in collecting and enforcing child support. So between the lower pay of women generally no matter what they do, and the unwillingness of many husbands to pay for the support of the children they fathered after they get divorced, the children of divorced parents who live with their single mothers, are more likely to live in poverty.

It's not rocket science.

Unfortunately, women who come out of messy relationships generally are not prone to jumping back into another relationship so they generally don't get re-married right away. In addition, there are numerous statistics that show that women with daughters have a much harder time finding a second husband, than women who have sons. Go figure! So the best news is that people are having fewer children and there are fewer divorces leaving single parents with children. But the problem is still wide-spread! And until women attain workplace wage parity with men they are going to have less money than men. And until the State's all start a more ruthless enforcement of child support, more women with children are going to continue to live in poverty. And the problems associated with poverty and single parenting will persist.

You won't have to wait long.
More woman graduate college than men.

You did say this though: "I am in no way suggesting or would support the government to force individuals to get married because they have children but from a societal perspective these numbers are pretty striking." And between the "because" and "but" here, there does seem to be an attempt to suggest something or at least equivocate around the policy that you claim you don't support but,,,

I know but they still aren't achieving parity with men, even female attorneys don't make the same salaries as male attorneys! That could change but it will take at least another decade!

It may be old news but it's still clearly relevant today. I'd love to see any data you may have that show kids do better without a father in their life.

What is the education of the single mothers?

What is the age range?

What is the socioeconomic status of those who are reported?
