Default Chauvin declines to testify, invoking his Fifth Amendment right as defense rests

Former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin said Thursday that he has declined to testify in his own trial, invoking his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination. Chauvin’s defense team announced that it intended to rest its case.

This came a day after a medical expert testified that heart disease and drug use was to blame for George Floyd’s death. David Fowler, a former chief medical examiner for the state of Maryland, said many factors contributed to Floyd’s manner of death, which he classified as “undetermined,” not homicide.

Wild shots in the dark at reaching jurors. Carbon monoxide??? If they show that kind of desperation, they will turn off jurors.

The Carbon Monoxide thing is weird because Chauvin and the cops were the ones who put him right next to the exhaust.

So the Defense's witness actually helped the prosecution's case.

Yes, Fowler's testimony yesterday was bizarre and unfocused. Made the defense look bad.

Right!?!?! These defense lawyers are terrible, or their hearts just aren't into it because they know he's guilty AF.

The defense is trying to argue that Chauvin is the only person who can judge whether his actions were justified. No one agreed with that.

Only a couple days of defense was mounted. Only, what, 7 witnesses? One of whom was discredited on the stand?

Typically, defenses that weak and brief never succeed.

But who knows with the jury...I'm sure there's at least one MAGA idiot on the jury who will refuse to consider the evidence.

I think it's more likely that there's a mistrial than a conviction or acquittal.

I hope there is no mistrial. After watching most of the trial the one image that stays in my mind is Chauvin casually sitting on Floyd's neck.

I hope Chauvin’s lawyey is pro bono, because he sure as shit is getting about that value in his defense.

I hope so too, but I feel like we've all seen this movie before.

One defense witness actually tried to say there was no use of force by Chauvin. Not excessive force, just force. Prosecution took that apart.

    For the defense -

Use of force expert testifies that Chauvin's knee was never on Floyd's neck.
Forensic expert testifies that Chauvin's knee was on Floyd's neck.

Which defense witness should the jury believe?
"We are all born ignorant, but one must work hard to remain stupid."

"Any fool can criticize, condemn and complain - and most fools do."
