"McConnell believes Trump committed impeachable offenses and considers the Democrats’ impeachment drive an opportunity to reduce the divisive, chaotic president’s hold on the GOP, a Republican strategist told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

McConnell told major donors over the weekend that he was through with Trump, said the strategist, who demanded anonymity to describe McConnell’s conversations."

"Even Trump ally Kevin McCarthy, the House Republican leader, shifted his position and said Wednesday the president bears responsibility for the horrifying day at the Capitol."

"Ten Republican lawmakers, including third-ranking House GOP leader Liz Cheney of Wyoming, voted to impeach Trump, cleaving the Republican leadership, and the party itself.

Cheney, whose father is the former Republican vice president, said of Trump’s actions summoning the mob that “there has never been a greater betrayal by a President” of his office.

Trump was said to be livid with perceived disloyalty from McConnell and Cheney."

Have no idea about his motivation. But I do know Senate cannot hold trial on a private citizen. Mitch knows that also.

Then why say it at all? Why risk enraging the far right extremists?

I truly do not know APL. For the record Democrats are not just "enraging the far right extremists". They are bringing that to common people who just wants a government that works.

    Ironic isn't it....

Had they been there in the early days of our nation they would not even have been allowed to vote & had they started some shit, whisky rebellion as an example, they are gonna be put in their place real quick........

Hopefully most of them have learned their lessons....

"There is no question former President Trump bears moral responsibility. His supporters stormed the Capitol because of the unhinged falsehoods he shouted into the world’s largest megaphone," McConnell wrote. "His behavior during and after the chaos was also unconscionable, from attacking Vice President Mike Pence during the riot to praising the criminals after it ended."

THAT is why Republicans AND Democrats are in support of impeachment.
    hardly.

It is a clown show making patriotism selective. Patriotic if lie about fraud, un patriotic if you challenge an elections integrity. Democrats, of course, have done it many times. They are scared shitless Trump will run again and could declassify. This is a joke and makes the democracy they are supposed to care about look like a joke too.
Did you complain about abuse of power when moscow mitch was pulling his shit & essentially leaving the country on standstill while he played politics to make Obama a one term President??

I have been mildly contemplating this as well.....

While they can~ & did, what is really gained??

Certainly IMHO he has had it coming but I dunno politically if all that much is gained..

On the flip side I don't see much lost either.....

I doubt it will change many opinions one way or the other......

I'd characterize it more as slightly bipartisan. But it will still be irrelevant. If the Democrats hand the charges to the Senate tomorrow and McConnell stalls to Monday--easily done given Friday then a weekend, and bothers to do anything on Monday, it will be irrelevant as that leaves just two days for a trial, and that can be drug out to Wednesday. Then Biden is President, Trump is gone, and the impeachment is the irrelevant act of revenge and clueless nonsense it was from the start.
