Default Man arrested for randomly pushing man under truck in downtown LA

Living in SF and walking past these types of folks on a daily basis this story hit home with me. (you can watch the video at the link) On one hand you have a lot of sympathy for folks who are living on the street but on the other hand a number of these folks are mentally ill and you have to be very alert when you walk by them or come in contact with them as you have no idea how they'll react. Scary incident.

Man arrested for randomly pushing man under truck in downtown LA

A suspect is in custody for a brazen attack caught on video in which a man was pushed under the wheels of a truck in downtown Los Angeles.

The victim was left in critical condition with a collapsed lung and broken bones after being pushed into the street and run over by a truck in the apparently random attack.

    IN CUSTODY!!
Earlier, @ABC7 aired a clip of an individual pushing a passerby underneath a panel truck. Thanks to our partners @LAFD he is now in custody. Alert Fire Fighters observed him walking in the #DTLA area and called for us to respond, where he was arrested. @LAPDHQ

Firefighters saw the video run on ABC7 and recognized the suspect - seen in the video wearing a lime-green hoodie - less than an hour later. They spotted him near Hill and Third streets in downtown and called 911.

"It was definitely the bright neon rain jacket and the baggy pants, and just the demeanor the guy had," firefighter Austen Johnson said.

The suspect was taken into custody a short time later. He was described as combative and did not have identification on him.

The suspect is expected to face a charge of attempted murder. Witnesses said they believe he is homeless.

Dramatic surveillance video details the brazen attack.

At first the suspect is sitting at an outside table on the sidewalk watching people walk by after 10 a.m. Wednesday in the 300 block of West 6th Street downtown.

As one man approaches, the suspect stands up and lunges into him, pushing him toward the street.

The mans tumbles to the ground and over the curb just as a box truck is driving by.

As the victim falls under the truck's front wheels, the suspect leans down to watch him get crumpled under the tire.

He then puts his hands in his pockets and casually walks away.

The victim suffered a collapsed lung and broken bones and was in critical condition at a local hospital.

Police described the suspect as a white male, about 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds and wearing a lime green hoodie.

Anyone with information is asked to call LAPD's 24-hour tipline at (877) LAPD-24-7 or Crime Stoppers at (800) 222-TIPS.

People like that might can deal with being sheltered a day, but they really belong in institutions. As I have said before, I work with a homeless issue organization. It is a difficult and thankless task, the people we try to help never miss an opportunity to make poor choices no matter what you do for them. Sheltering battered spouses out of domestic abuse is the easy part of the problem. The mentally ill are extremely difficult. Sometimes they are the same, sometimes they are not. The expense of transitional housing is usually subsidized by whichever government agency places them. That comes with a lot of strings attached like you cannot toss their ass on the street when their ass deserves to be tossed back on the streets, and many are well aware of the rules and exploit them to maximize the difficulty they can cause without actually being arrested. When you actually do get rid of them, they then turn around and file bogus claims trying to get your facilities blacklisted because you didn't bow down before them.

Homeless person is homeless and has no where to go and no food to eat and no sanitary facilities to use.
Homeless person asks around for a free place to stay, free food, and a place to bathe, ... with no results.
Homeless person weighs his options, comes up with a Plan.
Homeless person sees individual walking by at same time large Truck is passing and pushes victim in path of oncoming vehicle.
Homeless person is sentenced to lifetime of free place to stay, free food, and a place to bathe.

Is that basically the Story here?

Not that political, I think most people view the type of activity you are describing, what you see in the Tenderloin district, as mental illness. But that doesn't mean all homeless can be categorized the same, some are caught up in truly unfortunate circumstances

The how to deal with it is definitely political. Was arguably the top issue in our most recent mayors election. And in SF the issue is in almost every neighborhood, not just the tenderloin. So just because you buy a $2m condo in Pacific heights doesn't mean you won't be exposed to it on a daily basis.

Both Oakland and SF are having big issues with the tent cities right now and what to do with them. Not an easy topic

I would guess it's an 'Urban' problem, not just something San Fran is experiencing. How much do City Taxpayers want to shell out to solve the problem? What have other City's done? Maybe some type of 'Work Program' in exchange for a place to sleep and food to eat and a place to bathe?

In Seattle, taxpayers actually want to shell out a ton of money to deliberately not solve the problem, and to exacerbate it well out of control. Or so their voting habits would suggest.

That seems anti-productive. (Maybe you can get with cawacko and have him ship you some of the excess Hobos he's complaining about?)

Why would you live in such a place?
If you believe that man is good, there is no need for government. If you believe that man is bad, you dare not create one.

Seems like the Homeless would want to move to a warmer clime. Plus, doesn't it rain all the time in Seattle?

I would think so, too. The problem is that Portlandia and Seattle have such a terrible reputation for being the most pro-street junkie (homeless) cities in the country, so they all flock to the PNW. There's even been stories of cities throughout the country placing their homeless onto buses headed for Seattle. The climate here is extremely mild compared with the most of the country. When people speak of Seattle rain, it's not so much a steady downfall (our rain is usually just mist and drizzle), but the staggering number of overcast days which many people find gloomy/depressing. Last year between early October and early March, we somehow managed just three days of official sunshine.

I believe cawacko's story took place in L.A.
Have you considered making up some Flyers (along with a Bus Ticket) and handing them out to the Homeless in Seattle?
