    05/02/19: Family Pit Bull-Mix Kills Boy
    Louisville, KY - A 2-year old boy is dead after being attacked by a dog in Louisville's Chickasaw neighborhood. The attack occurred inside a home in the 3800 bock of Grand Avenue. Officers were dispatched to the home at 12:00 pm, after a report that a dog had bitten a child, according to Louisville Metro Police. When officers arrived at the scene, they found the injured boy and began performing CPR. He was transported to Norton Children's Hospital, where he later died.

    and

    A grand jury has indicted three people in the dog mauling death of 2-year-old Isaiah Geiling, including the child's mother.

    The dog's owners, Jack Charping, Jr., 50, and Sharon Charping, 53, were indicted on second-degree manslaughter charges, according to Assistant Commonwealth's Attorney Jeff Cooke.

    Isaiah's mother, 25-year-old Jennifer Geiling, is charged with reckless homicide.

    The Charpings and Geiling appeared Monday in Jefferson Circuit Court for arraignment, and the Charpings gave permission to the court to euthanize their pit bull.

    All three accused lived at the home in the 3800 block of Grand Avenue where the child was attacked.

    Police officers responded to the home around noon May 2 on reports of a child in the mouth of a pit bull, dispatch records show.

    Dear Dogsbite.org,

    I used to be a volunteer at an animal rescue, along with 3 of my 5 children. The rescue encouraged me to take photos of my children playing with the dogs, to show how friendly they were. On April 9, 2017, my daughters Emaly and Haylee (4 years and 8 years old) went with me to walk a couple of dogs in the evening. We chose to walk Dallas, a gray pit bull, and after playing with us for about 10-15 minutes, he jumped on Emaly, knocked her down, and opened his mouth on her face. He didn't get to bite down, because I was already pushing him off of her. So he latched onto my arm. The attack lasted approximately 20 minutes, until a neighbor saved my life. My daughters listened to my screams, and when I stopped screaming they thought Dallas had killed me.

    That was just over 2 years ago. Emaly still has PTSD and issues stemming from that. She is absolutely terrified of dogs. Big or small, no matter the breed. She was terrified of a Teddy Bear PUPPY. Haylee puts on a brave face, but the second she's around a loose dog, you can see the horror and panic in her face. My PTSD has been unbearable at times. My friends and family have become frustrated with my lack of "improvement" since the attack, because I refuse to ever trust any dog, anywhere, ever.

    Physically, I'm not doing any better today than I was last year. My arms feel tighter, like I have less mobility. I'm in pain 24/7 and it never gets better. I can barely bend my wrists forward or back, washing my kids hair in the bath is awkward and difficult, holding babies scares me because I never know when my left hand will stop working causing me to drop things. I work in a daycare, and had to give up working in the infant room because I refused to take chances. I have horrible scars, all over both arms, including a skin graft on my left arm. The children I care for ask me every single day what my scars are. They're only 18-24 months old, and have no idea what this kind of scarring is.

    I am constantly ridiculed and made fun of. People who have pit bulls or love them call me evil, stupid, a terrible mother, a waste of human life, you name it and I've heard it. All because I never want to see anyone suffer through anything like this again. People with dogs try to convince me that I shouldn't be afraid of their dog because their dog would never hurt a fly. When I can't bring myself to be near their dogs, I get made fun of or people become angry and insulted. This attack has forever changed my life, and the lives of my daughters, and the lives of my entire family. No pit bull is worth that cost.

    Thank you,
    Kylie Welch

    So close to home.... poor little Shelties and Yorkie. Thankfully these homicidal creatures weren't "rescued" and passed off to an unsuspecting kindly person.
    ~~~
    COLUMBUS, Ohio — A dog warden for Delaware County confirmed Wednesday that two pit bull-mixes were euthanized after they attacked and fatally injured a Yorkshire Terrier in the Polaris neighborhood.
    The dogs, part of a group of three, had been let out of a condo off-leash at the Polaris Village last Friday morning. At least two of the dogs attacked the terrier while a woman walking the smaller dog was unable to stop them. The Yorkshire Terrier had to be euthanized a short time later due to injuries. Delaware County officials said the owner of the pit bulls surrendered two of them for euthanasia, but kept a third which couldn't be proven to be part of the attack.
    Its owner, too distraught to interview, said this was the second time the terrier had been attacked by neighborhood pit bulls in less than two months.
    The news comes days after reports of another fatal attack by pit bull-mixes in Gahanna. In that incident, three pits on Howland Drive breached a backyard fence, then were able to maneuver a patio door open, chasing and cornering two neighboring Shetland sheepdogs inside their own home. The dogs were both later found dead by a caretaker.
    Did you see the horrific personal story I posted, above, about the former volunteer at a rescue place and what happened to her?
    The gods know the world needs animal shelters and fosters and those who care deeply about these dear but unloved little ones. The vast majority of volunteers and workers are very, very good-hearted ppl. I guess though just like in any field or profession, there are those who are blind to what their misguided feelings can lead to. They let their personal obsessions overwrite common sense and wisdom.
    It's too bad that others have to pay the price of their ignorance and hate.
    Many Shelters Candy-Coat Dogs with Aggressive Behaviors in their Zeal to Increase 'Live Release Rate.' We Examine 34 Case Files.
    Examining Cases Up Close
    DogsBite.org - Back in April, we were contacted about the "live release rate" trumping public safety at a California shelter. This is an epidemic across the country. In some cases, it borders on criminal. Dogs with serious aggression are being adopted to the public, sent to fosters, transferred to rescues and transported across county and state lines. They are being recycled back into communities instead of being euthanized due to the holy grail of boasting a high "save rate."
    To examine the issue up close, we filed a public records request in July for 34 dogs, including all behavioral and medical notes, at Sonoma County Animal Services. We were alerted to these particular 34 files to examine -- this is not a "random sampling" of cases -- in order to review questionable and problematic cases. Also to review the over arching issue of live release rate being prioritized over public safety, and in many cases, being prioritized over animal welfare too.
    You will read about dogs with serious aggression euthanized only after being adopted or fostered and returned. You will read about dogs with multiple aggression memos that management adopted out anyway.
    In the case of Sonoma County, the files show that some shelter workers operate under a "climate of fear," the fear of personally interacting with some of these aggressive dogs, as well as, sending them back into the community. Staffers witness the aggression and document the behavior (in behavioral memos) and at least in the 34 files we reviewed, many of these memos by employees are simply ignored by upper management. The live release rate pressure literally trumps all.
    Pit Bulls and Their Nature
    Are pit bulls naturally aggressive?
    According to the American Temperament Test Society, pit bulls have a temperament passing rate of 86.7%. This is lower than dogs such as the beagle, Border collie, and Chihuahua. A lack of discipline or training could make any dog, including the pit bull, dangerous, though.
    What is the number one reason pit bulls bite?
    Just like any other breed, pit bulls that bite do so out of lack of training and socialization. This is more of an owner error than a dangerous dog issue. In fact, according to the American Veterinary Medical Association, it is not within a pit bull's inherent characteristics to bite humans.
    Do pit bulls have the strongest bite force?
    A bite force study conducted by National Geographic concluded that the pit bull had the smallest bite force compared to the other "bully breed dogs." On average, a domestic dog had a bite force of 320 pounds of pressure. As a frame of reference, humans have a bite force of 120 pounds of pressure.
    Do pit bulls have a "locking jaw"?
    It's a common myth to believe that once pit bulls lock down on someone or something, they cannot let go. Their jaws work just like any other dog's jaw. The larger worry is about the dog's size and strength.
    General Facts About Pit Bulls
    It may surprise you to learn that the pit bull isn't an actual breed or that pit bulls are not "large dogs." Again, these are some of the myths that give pit bulls the "scary reputation" people give them.
    Is pit bull a "breed"?
    Pit bulls are a member of the terrier dog group. The actual breeds are called American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, American Bully, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. People use the term "pit bull" based on a dog's appearance rather than its actual breed.
    What size dogs are pit bulls?
    Pit bulls are not considered to be a "large breed." If size is the worry, other breeds of concern should be the Doberman pinscher, German Shepherd, or Bull Mastiff.
    How often are pit bulls put in shelters?
    Each year, pit bulls take the number one spot for the breed brought to the shelter most often. More shocking, however, is the fact that Chihuahuas still consistently take the number two spot.
    How many pit bulls are in the United States?
    There are approximately 3.6 million pit bulls in the United States. Of those 3.6 million, an estimated 1.2 million will end up in a shelter.
    What is the top breed regarding aggression towards humans?
    This may shock you, but dachshunds and Chihuahuas exhibit the largest amount of aggression towards humans. This includes both strangers and the dog's owner. Pit bull terriers are more known for aggression towards unknown dogs than humans.
    Injuries and Fatalities from Dog Attacks
    It's true that people have died from pit bull attacks, but they have also died from other dog bite injuries as well.
    How many people die from a pit bull attack?
    From 1982 to December 31, 2017, there were 389 reported (or made public) deaths from a pit bull attack.
    Are pit bulls the only type of dog to cause fatalities?
    In 2017, 12 different dog breeds caused fatalities, not just pit bulls. The breeds involved included Akita, Boxer mix, and German Shepherds.
    What are your chances of dying from a dog bite from any dog?
    You have a 1 in 112,400 chance of dying from a dog bite, from any breed. This is the third lowest cause of death risk you face, with only legal execution and being struck by lightning falling below it.
    How often do dog bites cause little to no injury?
    81% of dog bites cause little to no injury, meaning they could be cared for at home and without medical attention.
    How many dog bite injuries don't require hospitalization?
    Of the dog bite injuries brought to a medical practitioner's attention, 19% are treated and sent home.
    How many children suffer from pit bull bite injuries?
    A 5-year study conducted by the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia found that 50.9% of the dog bites were from pit bulls. In total, there were 30 dog breeds involved in the dog bites during that time. The next most common occurrence was from Rottweilers at just 8.9% of the time.
    Pit Bulls and Homeowner's Insurance
    Homeowner's insurance protects you against liability, but if you own a pit bull, you could be in for an unpleasant surprise.
    Do you pay more for homeowner's insurance if you have a pit bull?
    There isn't a specific law or ordinance stating that you have to pay more for insurance if you own a pit bull. However, many insurance companies have a "dangerous dog rider," which they require you to purchase to protect themselves against costly claims.
    How much do dog bite injury claims cost insurance companies?
    In 2016, dog bite injuries cost insurance companies over $600 million in claims. They also made up one-third of all homeowners insurance liability claims for that year.
    How much is the average dog bite injury claim worth?
    On average, dog bite claims paid a victim $33,230, according to the latest 2016 data. This is $3,984 less than the average for 2015.
    General Facts About Dogs
    Pit bulls are just a small fraction of the dogs that bite each year. With almost 80 million dogs in the US, everyone should know proper dog safety.
    How many dog bites occur each year?
    Approximately 4.5 million people are bitten by dogs each year. Typically, around 19% of those people need or seek medical attention.
    How many dogs live in the US?
    Approximately 78 million dogs live in the United States. There is also an estimated 85.8 million cats living in the United States.
    Bottom Line
    Pit bulls, like any dog, can be dangerous. It doesn't mean that they will be, though. Knowing your surroundings and understanding how to own a pit bull or any dog, if you decide to do so, is the best way to protect yourself.
