feb 7 2020 Sen. Bernie Sanders called for an end to cash bail across the country at the Democratic debate on Friday night, saying there are hundreds of thousands of people locked up because they can’t afford a several-hundred-dollar fee.

Sanders made his call to end bail as the candidates debated America’s criminal justice system and how it affects minorities in the United States.

“Most people don’t know this. Tonight in America, 200,000 people are in jail without having been convicted of anything. Two hundred thousand people — because they can’t afford the 500 bucks they need to get out of jail,” Sanders said.

“That is outrageous. We are going to end cash bail in America,” he added.

If the only incentive to going to court is to get bail back, and most bailees pay through a bail bondsman, and therefore do not get any money back, by Texting Driver's logic, none would be going to court now.

what?? you still pay a bondsman 10% in most cases of the bail - if you don't show up then you are responsible for the entire bail amount. As usual you are clueless.

It's been shown that simply releasing without bail ( and low level offenses without a prior record use get released on "own recognizance" ) for repeat offenders encourages more crime

If it's a low level offense, with no priors - then you probably don't need to post bail.

But repeat offenders and serious crimes require bail -same as it's been thru centuries of English common law

"in jail" doen't mean long term holding for a "traffic ticket" -it's like overnight holding in most cases.

Then you see a judge, and pay the fine..why are you entitled to drive (considered a "privilege")

What happens though is judges are forced to levy no bail even on repeat offenders -because they are racking up low level charges.
So leave bail,and leave the discression up to the judge to set bail for those repeaters
