Nope.. the earliest was Dutch to the sugar plantations of Recif Brazil.... late 1500s.

Read the history of the Sugar Jews.. They were the people expelled from Spain and Portugal.

I didn't say the earliest, and I know little about South America. Having once had to live amongst Bristolians, I have always a temptation to blame them for the doings of some of their ancestors, and I think they probably had a bigger part than the Sugar Jews, though I'm prepared to be proved wrong. I think my general point stands, however.

Somewhat on a tangent, here's a story you don't hear much about.

In the 16th-18th centuries, around a million slaves were seized from EUROPE. Not even David Duke says Jews did it. It was the Barbary corsairs, and they didn't even pay the native chieftains.

They took some people from areas in which my ancestors lived, actually.

Remember that in this history, Muslims and Jews were getting even with Spain and Portugal for booting them out.. That also influenced the fighting in the Caribbean.

Of course our resident sheep shagger knows nothing of the Welsh participation in slavery!!

I wrote an answer to this, but the Bristolians seem to have eaten it. It was the Barbary pirates, or some such from North Africa who made slave-raids on the Vale of Glamorgan - the Bristolians wouldn't dare! Bristolians are people who discredit a very beautiful city in the West of England, as did their heavy investment in the Slave Trade; America is probably named after one of their mayors, Ap Meurig, who they called Amerig; the town itself was called Bristow, but they add an 'l' to all words ending with a vowel: Americal, Africal, Bristol.

Oh those "Bristolians".. what does that have to do with Barbary Coast pirates and/or slave trade in the Caribbean?

It was pointed out that many Europeans were enslaved, and the Barbary pirates did the work.

Barbary pirates used coastal towns in North Africa for home ports.. They weren't all Muslims.. They were for the most part European renegades who went independent.. and most of them had a grudge against Spain and Portugal.

I have no views on their religion or origins. All I said was they carried off people from the area my father's ancestors lived in! The people, I gather, tended to be sold on to Istanbul: I certainly found some of the locals there much superior to Bristolians!
