Speaker Nancy Pelosi and other members of House Democratic leadership put out a joint statement Thursday afternoon saying that drawing any comparison between the U.S. and Israel and terrorist groups like Hamas and the Taliban “foments prejudice and undermines progress toward a future of peace and security for all.”
“We welcome the clarification by Congresswoman Omar that there is no moral equivalency between the U.S. and Israel and Hamas and the Taliban,” the statement said.
But in a sign of the simmering tensions within the party, the only other Muslim woman in Congress, Michigan Representative Rashida Tlaib, blasted the Democratic leaders.
“Freedom of speech doesn’t exist for Muslim women in Congress,” Tlaib tweeted. “The benefit of the doubt doesn’t exist for Muslim women in Congress. House Democratic leadership should be ashamed of its relentless, exclusive tone policing of Congresswomen of color.”
Republicans called on every House Democrat to join those already critical of Omar. Her comments also drew swift criticism from the American Jewish Committee.
“A Member of Congress puts 2 vibrant democracies, U.S. & Israel, in the same boat as 2 bloodthirsty terror groups, Hamas & Taliban. Beyond shocking. Beyond reprehensible,” the group’s chief executive, David Harris, tweeted.
