    Default No proof, no truth

For more than 150 years, The Nation has been committed to fearless, independent journalism.

We have a long history of seeking alternative views and taking unpopular stances. We believe it is important to challenge questionable conventional wisdom and to foster debate—not police it.

Focusing on unreported or inadequately reported issues of major importance and raising questions that are not being asked have always been a central part of our work.

This journalistic mission led The Nation to be troubled by the paucity of serious public scrutiny of the January 2017 intelligence-community assessment (ICA) on purported Russian interference in our 2016 presidential election, which reflects the judgment of the CIA, the FBI, and the NSA.

That report concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin personally ordered the hacking of the DNC and the dissemination of e-mails from key staffers via WikiLeaks, in order to damage Hillary Clinton’s candidacy.

This official intelligence assessment has since led to what some call “Russiagate,” with charges and investigations of alleged collusion with the Kremlin, and, in turn, to what is now a major American domestic political crisis and an increasingly perilous state of US-Russia relations.

To this day, however, the intelligence agencies that released this assessment have failed to provide the American people with any actual evidence substantiating their claims about how the DNC material was obtained or by whom.

Astonishingly and often overlooked, the authors of the declassified ICA themselves admit that their “judgments are not intended to imply that we have proof that shows something to be a fact.

You're bringing up an article that is almost a year old in an attempt to discredit the most recent information? Typical right wing idiocy. And it is no wonder you put the article link in such small letters.

And from such people turn away"

There's more recent information that includes proof?

    Post it, Mature Masturbator.

    I'll understand if you can't.

That is why The Nation published Patrick Lawrence’s article “A New Report Raises Big Questions About Last Year’s DNC Hack.”

The article largely reported on a recently published memo prepared by Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity (VIPS), which argued, based on their own investigation, that the theft of the DNC e-mails was not a hack, but some kind of inside leak that did not involve Russia.

VIPS, formed in 2003 by a group of former US intelligence officers with decades of experience working within the CIA, the FBI, the NSA, and other agencies, previously produced some of the most credible—and critical—analyses of the Bush administration’s mishandling of intelligence data in the run-up to the 2003 invasion of Iraq.

The VIPS memo, released on July 24 2017, whatever its technical merits, contributes to a much-needed critical discussion.

Despite all the media coverage taking the veracity of the ICA assessment for granted, we have only the uncorroborated assertion of intelligence officials to go on.

Indeed, this was noticed by The New York Times’s Scott Shane, who wrote the day the report appeared: “What is missing from the public report is hard evidence to back up the agencies’ claims that the Russian government engineered the election attack…. Instead, the message from the agencies essentially amounts to ‘trust us.’”

With Friday’s indictments of Russian intelligence officers, Ray McGovern and Bill Binney have written an open letter to President Trump making clear that the “evidence” behind the indictments is as fraudulent as the intelligence alleging WMD in Iraq.

It is being published ahead of the Trump-Putin summit on Monday.

    BRIEFING FOR: The President

FROM: Ray McGovern, former CIA briefer of The President’s Daily Brief, and William Binney, former Technical Director at NSA

SUBJECT: Info Your Summit Briefers May Have Missed

We reproduce below one of our most recent articles on “Russia-Gate,” which, in turn, draws from our Veteran Intelligence Professionals for Sanity Memorandum to you of July 24, 2017.

At the time of that Memorandum we wrote:

Forensic studies of “Russian hacking” into Democratic National Committee computers last year reveal that on July 5, 2016, data was leaked (not hacked) by a person with physical access to DNC computers.

After examining metadata from the “Guccifer 2.0” July 5, 2016 intrusion into the DNC server, independent cyber investigators have concluded that an insider copied DNC data onto an external storage device.

Key among the findings of the independent forensic investigations is the conclusion that the DNC data was copied onto a storage device at a speed that far exceeds an Internet capability for a remote hack.”

“We do not know who or what the murky Guccifer 2.0 is. You may wish to ask the FBI,” we wrote. However, we now have forensic evidence that shows the data provided by Guccifer 2.0 had been manipulated and is a fabrication.

We also discussed CIA’s cyber-tool “Marble Framework,” which can hack into computers, “obfuscate” who hacked, and leave behind incriminating, tell-tale signs in Russian; and we noted that this capability had been employed during 2016. As we pointed out, Putin himself made an unmistakable reference to this “obfuscating” tool during an interview with Megan Kelly.

FYI: "The (wink, wink) MOST RECENT information is more than 2 years old as the supposed crime occurred under the carless watch of Obama's DOJ. An "indictment" is not a convection of a crime it is but the declaration that some prosecutor has determined they have garnered enough evidence to suggest a crime has been committed. The real question is why did Mueller indict these non US CITIZENS and then refuse to present his case in the court room in a timely manner, as these charges stim from evidence garnered in 2016...SUPPOSEDLY and why did it take a SPEICAL COUNSEL to find this out when it was occurring in 2016 under the watch of Obama's DOJ?

Its Mueller that has "something to hide"......as it was his team that lobbied the court to delay "prosecution" because the defendants responded to the indictments.....MUELLER had no intention of prosecuting anyone as its documented that Mueller did not expect Russia to defend itself against his charges.....thus he refused to allow the defendants the right of due process in the discovery stage of prosecution where the prosecutor MUST under the US RULE OF LAW allow the defendant access to the evidence that brought about the indictment in the first place.

This is nothing but a dog and phony show...there will be no discovery, no trial, and no conviction.....its nothing but SHOW FOR THE PRESS. Think about it.....would the US send any of its top intel officers to Russia simply because some Russian Political Hack supposedly indicted them for interfering with their election process? It would take an idiot to actually assume that the CIA or any other intel agency would surrender to or even make an appearance in a Russian Court Room. Another FYI: The US interferes with elections all around the globe......I find the entire thing more than laughable. All of sudden after more than 50 years of Russia attempting to influence US elections......it suddenly became important when TRUMP WON and the TDS (trump derangement syndrome) became rampant. Hell Obama did not appear to have any concerns during his 2 terms when they caught China and he personally (hot mike) made promises to Vlad...….

Every WAR in US HISTORY has came about due to PROGRESSIVE POLITICS. The Civil WAR.....democrats/slavery.....the war was supposedly engaged because progressives were seeking SOCIAL JUSTICE....the same for the Spanish/American war......then the democrat bigot that brought us federal jim crow laws (Wilson) brought us the great war to end all wars WW 1.....then we have FDR needing a way out of the great depression....seeking social justice though another World War. Truman...the Korean War.....Kennedy/Johnson Viet Nam...… Carter/Clinton...gave us the current war on terror through pussy foreign policies.

Now we have the DEMOCRATS beating on their war drums again...… When Obama just gave free reign to Vlad to attack his neighbors..etc., Its all about political power....to hell with the PEOPLES of the UNITED STATES as long as they can control them.

Ahhh, the Trump poodles are out in full force this morning making their usual ASSumptions, and ignorantly passing along the right wing talking points never realizing that they are only ASSumption with no proof. In my lifetime I have never seen a trial go forward where the evidence, or proof, has been presented to the public for open discussion. The right wing, in all of their glorious ignorance, demands that the proof be given to the general public, and if not given then it does not exist, in their feeble mentalities anyway. To spend the time to prove what fools they are has become a waste of time simply because these poodles will never be convinced.

And, in their usual manner, "Every WAR in US HISTORY has came about due to PROGRESSIVE POLITICS." Slavery, in their mind, is acceptable as long as they are not the slaves. Hitler should have been allowed to enslave Europe. And, of course, neither Reagan, nor the Bush's, had anything to do with the invasion of Iraq, and Afghanistan.

And never forget that they are the ones who are supporting cowards, and liars, while calling others "pussies".

Oh yes, simply because the proof was not discovered until two years after the crime does not mean it does not exist.
