Both left wing and right wing morons lie about past presidents. It makes them feel better about being 100% partisan for their party. I voted for Reagan twice but, after Iran/Contra, I regretted my decision. The right is going to tell you how Reagan caused the collapse of the Soviet Union but there's evidence to the contrary. I worked at the Pentagon in 1981 and heard a seminar from a gentleman who was considered the top expert on the Soviet Union at the time. He said back then that the USSR was on the brink of economic collapse and was inevitable. It was only a matter of time. He said this in 1981. And he was right. Reagan had little to do with it. The USSR would've collapsed regardless of who was in the White House.
But those who want to believe Reagan was the reason will continue to believe it because their suffering from Cognitive Dissonance.

I agree that it was likely going to happen regardless. But the pressure brought on the Soviets by the Pope, Thatcher and Reagan most certainly expedited the collapse. Reagan recognizing a potential partner in Gorbachev was a positive for both countries. Reagan was certainly not perfect, but he provided hope to the American people at a time that the US was going through major economic pain with double digit inflation and interest rates in conjunction with high unemployment.

Volcker and Reagan made the tough choice to raise rates to kill inflation. Knowing it would cause a short term recession. Republicans paid dearly in 82 for that in the house and Senate. But it worked. We then enjoyed an economic boom from 1983-2000.

the market was bottoming out prior to the stimulus. I do agree it was needed and it helped to begin the recovery. But the overspending in subsequent years was vastly wasteful. The economic recovery under Obama was one of the slowest and weakest. The vast amounts of regulations imposed by Obama admin hurt our recovery potential.
