The world is at risk of entering "hothouse" conditions where global average temperatures will be four to five degrees Celcius higher even if emissions reduction targets under a global climate deal are met, according to a new report by top international scientists.

The new study was published in the US Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on Monday.

New South Wales drought now affects entire state

Australia's most populous state, New South Wales (NSW), is now entirely in drought, officials have confirmed.

A dry winter has intensified what has been called the worst drought in living memory in parts of eastern Australia.

NSW produces about a quarter of Australia's agricultural output. It was officially listed as "100% in drought" on Wednesday.

India monsoon floods 'kill more than 300' in Kerala

At least 324 people have been killed in flooding in the southern Indian state of Kerala, the regional chief minister says.

Rescuers are battling torrential rains to save residents, with more than 200,000 people left homeless in camps.

The state government said many of those who died were crushed under debris caused by landslides.

With more rains predicted and a red alert in place, the main airport has been shut until 26 August.

Hundreds of troops have been deployed to rescue those caught up in the flooding.

Helicopters have been airlifting people marooned by the flooding to safety, with photographs and footage emerging from the area showing elderly people and children being rescued.

More than 300 boats are also involved in rescue attempts, AFP news agency reports.

The government has urged people not to ignore evacuation orders, and is distributing food to tens of thousands who have fled to higher ground.

    How bad is the flooding?
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has described the flooding as the worst the state has seen in 100 years.

Audit warns 840 bridges may face risk of collapse in France

Government comes under new pressure to increase infrastructure maintenance spending after bridge collapse in Italy.

About 840 bridges across France are suffering from serious damage and at risk of collapse in the coming several years, according to an audit commissioned by the French government.

President Emmanuel Macron's government had already promised new infrastructure spending, but is coming under new pressure after a bridge collapse in neighbouring Italy on Tuesday killed 43 people.

You're just not very bright, Brasil has always been subject to bouts of severe drought. Indeed the 1930s were particularly severe. Latterly though, deforestation across the Amazon Basin is having a profound effect, particularly on the head waters and tributaries of the great Amazonian rivers.

So explain to your rather thick audience , maggot, that the deforestation was caused by human activity and not by all the trees going on vacation.

California wildfires damage in 2018 worth over $2.6bn

More than 6,000 wildfires have hit the US state this year and experts say situation to worsen in the future.

More than 6,000 wildfires have hit the US state of California this year, burning an area of 580,100 hectares (1,435,263 acres) and causing damages worth more than $2.56bn, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection and the National Interagency Fire Center.

The Mendocino Complex fire, which was active for over 35 days, burned more than 186,000 hectares (459,000 acres), making it the largest complex fire in the state's history.

Stanford Earth System Science Professor Noah Diffenbaugh stated that atmospheric conditions for California wildfires are expected to worsen in the future because of the effects of climate change on the state.

"What we're seeing over the last few years is consistent with the historical trends in terms of increasing temperatures, dryness and increased wildfire risk," he said.
