Over 1,700 died in Spain, Portugal due to heatwave: WHO
    Saturday, 23 July 2022 8:34 AM [ Last Update: Saturday, 23 July 2022 8:34 AM ]

A ferocious heatwave that brought record temperatures to parts of Europe has resulted in the deaths of over 1,700 people on the Iberian peninsula alone, according to the World Health Organization's European office.

"Heat kills. Over the past decades, hundreds of thousands of people have died as a result of extreme heat during extended heatwaves, often with simultaneous wildfires," WHO Regional Director for Europe Hans Kluge said in a statement on Friday.

"This year, we have already witnessed more than 1,700 needless deaths in the present heatwave in Spain and Portugal alone," Kluge added.

The regional director also said that exposure to extreme heat "often exacerbates pre-existing health conditions," warning that "individuals at either end of life's spectrum - infants and children, and older people - are at particular risk".

Oak Fire: Emergency declared as wildfire rages near Yosemite National Park

A state of emergency has been declared in part of California as the largest active wildfire in the US rapidly spreads near Yosemite National Park.

The Oak Fire has quickly grown since starting on Friday, and firefighters have struggled to get the blaze under control.

"Explosive fire behaviour is challenging firefighters", California's fire department said.

More than 6,000 people have been evacuated and 10 homes destroyed.

The scale of the blaze marks an ominous start to California's wildfire season and officials have warned that a combination of drought, climate change, and overgrown vegetation are posing significant challenges and increasing the chances of the fire spreading rapidly.

Much of the United States is sweltering through a heatwave and heat advisory warnings are in effect in more than a dozen states. Temperatures in Mariposa County hit 96F (35.5C) on Saturday, and are expected to stay at that level for the next few days.

Rare July rain in Qatar as storms hit Gulf
Heavy downpours hit Qatar and other parts of the Gulf in unusual July weather.

Incredibly rare July thunderstorms and rain have hit Qatar and other parts of the Gulf, shocking residents unused to the weather.

The rain and thunder started early on Thursday morning, causing floods in some parts of Qatar.

Al Jazeera’s Rob McElwee, reporting from Doha, said that rain in July in Doha “just doesn’t happen”.

Revealed: how climate breakdown is supercharging toll of extreme weather

Guardian analysis shows human-caused global heating is driving more frequent and deadly disasters across the planet, in most comprehensive compilation to date

The devastating intensification of extreme weather is laid bare today in a Guardian analysis that shows how people across the world are losing their lives and livelihoods due to more deadly and more frequent heatwaves, floods, wildfires and droughts brought by the climate crisis.

The analysis of hundreds of scientific studies – the most comprehensive compilation to date – demonstrates beyond any doubt how humanity’s vast carbon emissions are forcing the climate to disastrous new extremes. At least a dozen of the most serious events, from killer heatwaves to broiling seas, would have been all but impossible without human-caused global heating, the analysis found.

Most worryingly, all this is happening with a rise of just 1C in the planet’s average temperature. The role of global heating in supercharging extreme weather is happening at “astonishing speed”, scientists say.

“The world is changing fast and it’s already hurting us – that is the blunt summary,” said Prof Maarten van Aalst, the director of the International Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre. The world is currently on track for a rise of at least 2.5C. Based on what we have experienced so far, that would deliver death and destruction far greater than already suffered.

A little snippet from the home turf of the Brit maggot- climate Denier extraordinaire.

Source of River Thames dries out ‘for first time’ during drought

Head of the Thames is now more than 5 miles downstream as forecasters warn of further high temperatures to come
The river’s source has shifted from its official start point outside Cirencester during the continuing dry weather and is now more than 5 miles (8km) downstream.

Dr Rob Collins, director of policy and science at the Rivers Trust, said: “Following the prolonged dry weather, the source of the Thames in Gloucestershire has dried up, with a weak flow now only just about discernible more than 5 miles downstream (at Somerford Keynes).

California always burns. Indeed, the Sequioas evolved to literally withstand fires and reproduce via fires, because California burns so regularly.

Hell, the fires in present day are tiny in size compared to the fires that swept the West in the 1500s-1800s.

Fires in california are nothing new - indeed those 'world's largest trees' literally evolved to withstand fires and to reproduce via fires, over thousands of years.

Yes, they said the same about Australian fires- until the unprecedented ferocity killed the vegetation off and wiped out most of wildlife.

    7PM in Boise. Still 102.

    Won’t drop below 90 until around 10PM.

    But, it’s a hot heat.
