Default New Survey Shows Young People Are Staying Liberal and Conservatives Are Dying Off

For obvious reasons, the broadly liberal demographic trends in American politics have received much less attention since the 2016 election. Yet the fact remains that America is politically sorted by generations in a way it never has before. The oldest voters are the most conservative, white, and Republican (the dying subspecies), and the youngest voters the most liberal, racially diverse, and Democratic. There is absolutely no sign the dynamic is abating during the Trump years. If anything, it is accelerating.

This is definitely true of my kids and their cohort. They range in age from 30 to 43. They do all vote, but are much less interested in politics in general than I am. But at their age, I was the same way. I voted of course but unless there was some hot button political issue, I was more focused on work, family, life stuff. It will be interesting to see if they become more conservative as they age.

Guns are leading this trend. the young people want registration and prohibiting crazies from getting guns. They don't want assault style weapons in civilian hands. Not asking too much.

Not surprising, with Trump pulling the national political focus further to the right even those who only a short time ago were slightly leaning right are now considered liberal. The traditional Republican is disappearing, someone as a Kasich is a rarity today

without assault weapons, how will you fight trumps tyranny?
A sad commentary on we, as a people, and our viewpoint of our freedom can be summed up like this. We have liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans, yet those very people look at Constitutionalists as radical and extreme.................so those liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans must believe that the constitution is radical and extreme.

Yet it's they who are killing each other.
What you describe will never happen in my lifetime. Count on it.

Being able to make a real living, having a 21st certury healthcare system like the rest of the advanced post-industrial world, and not turning an entire generation of americans into debt peons for going after an education might be helpful to society.

About this time in 2016 the DNC was declaring the GOP dead as well. How'd that work out for them?

And the population will continue to age. In 2016 there were 49.2 million over 65 and 73.6 million under 18. In 2035, for the first time, those over 65 will outnumber those under 18 (78 million to 76.4). By 2060 there will be 94.7 million over 65 vs 79.8 million under 18 [Census Bureau].
