I sure do. In fact we have a civilian agency called NASA that does excellent work....best in the world...in Space exploration, technology development and transfer national defense and intelligence.

One of the first questions that Trump is going to hear is the same question that was asked back in the early Sixties when the NACA was expanded into NASA and the development of our Space program was kept under civilian control. So the question will be why should military control of space be expanded and why can't NASA perform this function? Then he'll be asked how he intends to fund this new branch of the military.

If a hostile power launched a missile and blew up a cell phone tower on U.S. soil, it would be an act of war and invite massive retaliation. But if they destroyed a communications satellite, does the U.S. deploy the 82nd Airborne to respond? Will a Space Force have an intelligence function? Does it operate independently of NASA? Does it get its own moon base, or muscle its way into the base NASA plans to build? Will its relationship with NASA remain consistent with current practices, with the Space Force supplying astronaut candidates to the agency in the same way the service branches do today?

There are, of course, funding questions to be answered. Establishing a new branch of the armed forces isn't simply rearranging the office furniture and choosing new uniforms. Nor is it simply the cordoning of spacecraft experts under one roof. Only four percent of the U.S. Air Force are pilots. It takes another 300,000 airmen — from accountants to supply clerks — to support them. There is no reason to believe that the Space Force will be any different. Is that the best use of tax dollars? And if we are spending on space, is militarization really the best way to go? NASA's entire budget amounts to one-half of 1 percent of the federal budget. (Defense gets about 20 percent.) As the Planetary Society, a space advocacy group, points out, Americans spend more annually on chewable dog toys than they do on robotic space exploration, from Mars rovers to Pluto flybys. Imagine what NASA could do with Space Force-levels of funding.

A Space Force is not a new idea and it is not deranged.
And more importantly, do we even want it? Because once we make space a battlefield, we shouldn't be surprised when people decide to use it.

No but there were reasons why it was left under Civilian command.

Air Force Space Command, sometimes referred to informally as U.S. Space Command, is a major command of the United States Air Force, with its headquarters at Peterson Air Force Base, Colorado.

Operationally, AFSPC is an Air Force component command subordinate to U.S. Strategic Command (USSTRATCOM), a unified combatant command. It is the primary space force for the U.S. Armed Forces.

Must be this morning he switched over from "Fox and Friends" and watched a 1950's monster movie on TCM

The fun will now be watching the Trumpkins defend Donald and tell us why we need a new military branch for space
Did you cry when Reagan helped end the cold war?

Did you cry when you found out we have military branches?

Space and you're now whining? If Obama had done it you would say he is a visionary.

    You're pathetic.

Nothing wrong with that proposal -- he is just being forward thinking -- sooner or later, we will have a significant presence in exploratory space travel.

Space Force sounds like the kind of comic book idea that would come out of Trump's comic book mind...

Given that he seems to live in a comic book world.

OK...So is Trump just going to split it off from the Air Force and give it independent command? OK.
