The US has treated Puerto Ricans terribly. We have raped their resources and squandered fantastic opportunities to turn that island into a resort mecca and jewel of the Caribbean. We are letting a paradise slip through our fingers. The place could be a gold mine with proper management, but instead, we don't let them manage it themselves, and we have allowed our small-thinking capitalists to rip them off.
Every state of the Union has voting representation in the US govt, and every state has managed to make sure there is ample federal spending in their state. We had military bases in Puerto Rico when we thought it was strategic, and since they have no vote in the US govt those bases were abandoned. All civilian employees were fired, and the local economic boost of a military base immediately dried up.
The biggest problem preventing Puerto Rico from ever becoming a state is they speak Spanish, and too many Americans can't stand the thought of any state speaking Spanish.
Golden opportunity lost.
