A Trump trade war would hit red states hard

In Iowa, where farmers raise 40 million to 50 million pigs annually, President Trump’s tariffs on steel and aluminum from Mexico have already cost producers $560 million, according to an Iowa State University economist. How can that be, you ask. Mexico has threatened countervailing tariffs that include a 20 percent tariff on American pork. That prospect alone sent hog prices tumbling. If you like barbecued ribs, this could be a great summer for you. If you raise the pigs, you may be eating more barbecued beans.

Soybean growers throughout the Midwest are nervously watching as China, which buys a quarter of American soybeans,

Local newspapers across the heartland are full of similar tales of value destruction and lost income as a result of Trump trade war tweetism. In Great Lakes states, traditional steel makers might benefit from the administration’s 25 percent tariff on foreign steel. But for steel users, it’s an entirely different story. Shortly after tariffs were announced, steel suppliers, no longer as fearful of price competition, began jacking up prices — they’re no fools. That has meant a 40 percent increase since January in the cost of steel for their customers who use it in their finished products, according to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. They can either pass that increase on to you or be less profitable.

Trump doesn’t see it that way. He lives in a world where Pittsburgh is still Steel City. But it’s not the 1960s anymore — Pittsburgh makes sophisticated robots, not steel.

Oh so we will get cheap pork? At least that's something, good for me in the short run. Not worth it though, as this will screw up so much else, and hurt American people. Fucking dumbass Trumpkins thought a person that ran casinos, and businesses into the ground was the right choice.

It will go down temporarily, till supplies are gone. If you are a hog farmer and you're losing money, you're going to switch to something else, eh? This isn't rocket science; it's basic economics.

The alternative is for the government to pay farmers and growers the difference between market prices and what they require to stay afloat. Guess whose money they'll be using? Hint: It's not Trump's.

How Trump's Tariffs Are Squeezing His Farmer Support Base

But as the former businessman threatens to unleash a global trade war, the same farmers are now forced to come to terms with how up to $150 billion in proposed tariffs on Chinese goods, and subsequent backlash from the Middle Kingdom, could hurt their livelihood.

“Things out here right now are tough already. We are already barely making ends meet,” says Daren Niemeyer, a 49-year-old farmer in Nebraska who voted for Trump in 2016, when asked about his thoughts of the trade war tensions between China and the U.S.. “It’s just kicking us while we are down.”

Maybe with "dry goods" but with perishables, no. Meat has a limited shelf life; they're going to sell the hogs at their prime as always. The choice then becomes -- who do the meat packers sell it to? Take a loss by paying the tariffs to get it to overseas markets? Or take a loss and sell it domestically?

No matter how you slice it, the tariff trade wars are going to harm both American workers/farmers and eventually American consumers.
