Default Justice Department seizes New York Times reporter's phone, email records

A LIBERAL ALREADY CLAIMS THAT 'TRUMP IS ASSAULTING THE FREEDOM OF THE PRESS'

A New York Times reporter had years worth of phone and email records seized by the Trump administration’s Justice Department, the paper reported Thursday evening.

Ali Watkins learned Feb. 13 from federal prosecutors about the seizure of data related to two email accounts and a phone number— though not the messages content — from telecommunications companies, including Verizon and Google.

The seizure of Ms. Watkins‘ records grew out of a leak investigation against James A. Wolfe, the Senate Intelligence Committee’s former director of security, with whom Ms. Watkins was romantically involved.

Mr. Wolfe was arrested Thursday on charges of lying to the FBI about his contacts with reporters.

According to the Times, the seizure of her records is the first known instance of Trump administration investigators going after a reporter’s data, although the Obama administration normalized the practice in its aggressive investigations of leaks.

Ms. Watkins told the Times she did not use Mr. Wolfe as a source. He had no comment to the newspaper.

“The records covered years’ worth of Ms. Watkins’s communications before she joined The Times in late 2017 to cover federal law enforcement. During a seven-month period last year for which prosecutors sought additional phone records, she worked for Buzzfeed News and then Politico reporting on national security,” the Times wrote.

“Freedom of the press is a cornerstone of democracy, and communications between journalists and their sources demand protection,” said Eileen Murphy, a Times spokeswoman.

The times had no problem with the DOJ wire tapping Trump Towers in the middle of a presidential election in violation of the 4th amendment but thinks enabling a felon in leaking to the press is protected via the 1st amendment? Really? The right to a free press ceases to exist at the threshold were THE PEOPLE are endangered. Treason is a paramount and serious charge. The times would be the first to tell you that not even a president is above the rule of law.....but THE PRESS is? Again....really? This is a repeating pattern with the times...during the gulf war it leaked classified information to the world that cost the loss of both US LIVES AND TREASURE.

They blithely ignored the fact that during Obama's Reign of Error there was a war on leakers, don't they?

If Donald J. Trump decides as president to throw a whistle-blower in jail for trying to talk to a reporter, or gets the F.B.I. to spy on a journalist, he will have one man to thank for bequeathing him such expansive power: Barack Obama. His administration prosecuted nine cases involving whistle-blowers and leakers, compared with only three by all previous administrations combined. It repeatedly used the Espionage Act, a relic of World War I-era red-baiting, not to prosecute spies but to go after government officials who talked to journalists.

Under Obama, the Justice Department and the F.B.I. spied on reporters by monitoring their phone records, labeled one journalist an unindicted co-conspirator in a criminal case for simply doing reporting and issued subpoenas to other reporters to try to force them to reveal their sources and testify in criminal cases.

This is only the beginning of some very bad days for liberals, most notably Obama, Hillary, and their merry band of discpicables. Trump has been sly like a fox, letting these in-breds make all of this noise about wanting "justice" in corralling those colluding and plotting to scam the system. All the while he was privy to everything he wanted to know, he's the friggin president.

he gave them rope, and now they will hang themselves with it.

    Too early to say.

I noticed that the liberals on JPP seem to be ignoring this news. They haven't started a single thread about it so far.

    I think I know why.

They specialize in fake news, doesn't qualify

And I think what we are seeing is the beginning of the end for everyone even remotely involved with the 2016 Democrat election process.

From Hillary's emails, to Comeys leaks, to IT specialists, once one shoe drops, the likes of Debbie Wasserman and her ilk will start talking to save their hides.
Can be no mistaking the corruption involved in collusion with the media, the DNC, Christ Donna Brazille admitted to giving Hillary the questions beforehand in debating Bernie, and nothing happened, the press froze the story.

they can run and hide but time is up, they have to come out and play now.

I find it amusing when liberals pretend to be selectively horrified by behavior they condoned, excused, defended or ignored when DEMOCRATS did similar things.

Default She writes for one of the "sources" liberals trust

Looks like Ali Watkins blamed Trump lawyers for leaks, while she was apparently fucking a Senate committee staffer twice her age who was leaking classified info to her in exchange for pussy.
