I'm about 35 miles south of my high school.

EDIT: BAM! 34.8 miles according to MapQuest.

It's obviously different for each person but I don't know if it's a don't look back thing for all. I live 12 miles from my high school but I rarely talk to people I went to school with. For me my best friends are the ones I made in college and then met in my 20's and 30's.

I would suspect for many where their family lives plays an important role. I know being a parent now how great it is to have family nearby to help out.

Edit: To your point there are definitely older people for whom high school has never ended
