"He is one of the smartest people I have ever met in politics," Patrick, 67, told North Texas radio host Mark Davis on 660 AM. "He's able to analyze things so quickly."

Patrick said in 2017, Trump called Patrick out of the blue after he had been on a Fox News program talking about border security. Patrick said it was a lengthy conversation that had him impressed with the president's communication skills.

"He's a great listener," Patrick said. "Very, very bright."

Patrick said he first met Trump in 2016 and while they were campaigning together marveled at how Trump could be so sharp as he traveled the state in the nation during long campaign days.
