From what I have read about it, his drill instructor performance in Full Metal Jacket, for the most part, was neither scripted nor rehearsed.
Kubrick just gave a little direction and turned him loose with cameras rolling.
He had played the part, for real, so many times he could have played the roll in his sleep.





It was absolutely believable that he could drive Lenard to murder and suicide.

IIRC he was a SSgt. when he retired from the Corps, then was reinstated a few years back so the USMC could promote him to a full Gunney. Any more info on that would be appreciated.
