We could cut the military budget in half & it wouldn't be enough for me.

You are 100% spot on STY. I've seen it too, first hand, and yes it is disgusting. I've said this many times... I'm not anti-military, I'm anti-military waste, fraud, and abuse . And there's a ton of all three.

As long as they get rid of the waste, fraud and abuse the budget could be cut in half and we'd have basically the same military. The army is basically a social welfare jobs program. I've seen it first hand.

    OK where?
    nukes?
    NATO?
    counter-terrorism?
    stealth development?
    SWARM technology?
F-35? (which is finally starting to fly well)
    robotic ships?
    space weapon development?

we could leave afghanistan, although that would bring condition back to pre-911

whats your plan? I've given you mine - detente with Russia would be a great relief

    no. not even close.
hi tech military means paying for personnel costs. when we lose experiences pilot for ex, we have to get new ones trained from scratch. Sequestor hit salaries hard.

Waste and fraud is endemic with huge organizations, and that's a good place to look - but it's not enough to reduce costs of our far flung obligations, and continuing to develop high teck.

Our strategy is to win with stealth and high tech. China's is to"swarm" our defenses

When you say 'military' you're painting with a wide brush. There's a big difference between the air force (high tech) and the army(cannon fodder). I have no experience with the navy so I have no opinion there.

it funds the strongest military in the world, as well as troop increases and the largest pay raise in more than a decade for service members.

    Keeping America Safe

“My highest duty is to keep America safe. Nothing more important,” Trump said.

The spending bill also includes, Trump explained, funding for the “final fight in certain areas,” pointing to the liberation of nearly all of the territory once held by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria.

The bill, which Congress passed hours earlier, funds the government for fiscal year 2018 and includes $700 billion for defense spending.

Trump said that defense funding contained in the bill is an increase of more than $60 billion from last year. It funds the addition of critically needed ships, planes, helicopters, tanks and submarines, he pointed out.

How could this be when the US spends more than any other country on the military.

Skilled diplomats and a sane foreign policy could save billions of dollars of military expenditure.

Those that spend the most are lacking in both areas

This is a very good list. I was going to make this point without this but this just strengthens it.

The misconception is that the US is far outspending its adversaries. In reality the cost of things in China and the cost of things in the US make up a lot of that ground. Im frankly shocked China is spending 1/4 of what the US is. I thought it was something like 1/8 or 1/10th. At 1/4th they are definetly spending more than the US in real terms. Just consider how much a US private is paid as opposed to a chinese private. Now consider that they spend next to nothing on foreign deployments as well.

army is high tech now too. Literally everyone is a specialist-it costs a lot to train even grunts.
Once you get into the officer corps you are dealing with leadership positions as well, and these personell lhave to be paid enough, or they leave after there enlistment
