Re: Grind's position - which is sort of a different topic from the OP - it's not about where we were or are: it's where we want to be.
We have evolved, and we keep evolving. No one wants leaders like the world had in the 10th century. We saw where a complete abandonment of ethics and morality has gotten us throughout history; the world is better when leaders are MORE ethical. Demanding more of our leaders has gotten to where we are. We shouldn't abandon that in favor of some kind of warped Machiavellian POV.
I'll forget about the OP for a minute. Trump lies all of the time. This has made him a leader without credibility - our allies don't know when he can be believed, nor can our adversaries or enemies. Perhaps with the latter, that can be an advantage - but is it really a recipe for successful leadership long-term?
Leaders need credibility. They need some sort of moral foundation. Otherwise, we just go backwards.
