Authorities were also appealing to patriotic feelings by holding the vote on the anniversary of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea from Ukraine. Polls show that most Russians continue to see the takeover of that Black Sea peninsula as a major achievement despite subsequent Western sanctions.

The only question, is winning by how much.
There has not been a nominally free press in Russia since the Yeltsin days, zero chance for opposition parties.

From what I can tell, and what people have told me, Russians have a complicated relationship with Putin. To some extent, he has a base of support from conservative, nationalist, and rural areas of the nation. We even see this in our country with the emergence of the Trumpettes - there are always going to be a large number of people who value stability and strength, over democracy and freedom. Which is no less true in Russia, which has seen more suffering than most European nations are tend to place high value on stability and the strong authoritarian leader.

On the other hand, Putin is an anathema to Russian liberals, democrats, in large swaths of the urban centers of Russia. It is really remarkable how quickly Russian transitioned from a totalitarian soviet state, to an authoritarian oligarchy. I have spent my whole life hoping that the democratic liberals and progressives in Russia prevail, that something resembling a liberal western democracy emerges. But whatever does emerge, is going to have to accommodate the unique aspects of Russian culture, geography, and history.

Socialism is just the modern word for monarchy.

D.C. has become a Guild System with an hierarchy and line of accession much like the Royal Court or priestly classes.

Private citizens are perfectly able of doing a better job without "apprenticing".
