They're Americans. You want to start deporting Americans now?

This does not surprise me in the least. We have become a nation of entitled, uninquisitive, mentally lazy people and it shows in our kids (students) and their efforts at anything hard....except how to beat some shoot em up vulgar video game.

Yet you make stupid people look good.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

I am puzzled about the motivation for this thread.........nobody is objecting to immigration......particularly the immigration of highly qualified and educated people.........its illegal immigration which is the issue.........

What would we lose if immigrants could no longer come to America? Surprisingly, one of the most important things America would lose is the contributions made by their children.

My father was right off the boat, and he never spared any effort telling me that it was a gift to immigrate here and ultimately be given citizenship.
He made it a point to tell me that recent immigrants are the backbone of this country....and I am pretty sure that is what he told the rednecks and white trash who harangued him to speak better English, or called him a commie.

He never gave up his culture or native language...he never 100 percent fully assimilated, mostly having friends in the immigrant community....but in a way, I think that was a strength ... he was worldly, he had experience with multiple cultures and languages, he had travelled the world and absorbed a lot of experience , he had seen life from multiple angles-- all of which undoubtedly contributed to his character, inner strength, and ability to deal with adversity and overcome obstacles.

I guess, in principle, German is not one that make it to the top of the list of useful languages here.

I am sure the vast majority of Americans feel it is useless to know foreign languages.

This is not a sentiment shared in most other countries. I have relatives that are fluent in four languages. It's not like they use them on a daily basis, but unless one lives the life of an isolated, toothless hillbilly, there is plenty of opportunity to use those languages when traveling, or among immigrant communities in North America.

Even watching foreign movies and TV shows in the native language on Netflix. You would be amazed how much good television is produced outside North America!

I am of a practical bent. When you look at a map you see immediately why few Americans use a second language given our isolation. Europeans live so jammed together multiple languages makes sense. Speaking an immigrants language just means their english usage is learned slower. When I go to Mexico people often understand reality and want to speak english to me.
