‘Black Panther’ Hits $1 Billion Mark In Worldwide Box Office Sales

“Black Panther” has surpassed $1 billion at the worldwide box office, challenging industry norms about films with black casts.

The Marvel blockbuster passed the major benchmark on Friday, Forbes reports.

The film is now the United States’ ninth domestically highest-grossing film of all time, and had the second-largest four-day domestic opening weekend. “Black Panther” brought in $242 million in the U.S. over Presidents Day weekend, behind the $288 million “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” made when it opened in 2015.

The international success of “Black Panther” has challenged the myth that films with predominately black casts don’t sell ― and it helps unravel “unwritten Hollywood rules,” Jeff Bock, a senior analyst at entertainment research firm Exhibitor Relations, told The New York Times.

“I think about it like a wall crumbling,” Bock said. “In terms of ‘Black Panther,’ no studio can say again, ’Oh, black movies don’t travel, overseas interest will be minimal.’”

I did see it and enjoyed it on several levels.

The action and special effects were good, although the film spent more time on character development then special effects and action. I saw that as a plus.

The characters were developed as Africans and African-Americans, not somebody else in dark skin .. and the irony of the plot is that the villain, played by Michael B. Jordan, actually makes the most important point about power.

On another level, I've watched American media since the days when black artists had to put white people on the cover of their albums under the myth that white audiences would not buy identifiable black artists.

Good to have lived long enough to see that myth gone forever.

It was an excellent movie, the women were badass! I did a lot of reflection leaving that movie.

It's ok. One of the better villains for a Marvel movie but it's pretty long and a lot of the action is boring and pretty pointless.
