Default Florida Gov Scott signs gun control bill after Parkland school shooting

Florida Gov. Rick Scott signed an unprecedented $400 million school safety package into law, marking the first gun control measures passed in the state in more than 20 years.

The Florida House and Senate earlier this week voted to send the bill to the Republican governor for approval in wake of the deadly shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

The legislation raises the minimum age to buy a gun of any kind to 21, implements a three-day waiting period to purchase a firearm and bans bump stocks.

The bill, named for the Parkland high school, also sets aside $400 million to fund the development of a statewide program, which will train willing school employees on how to handle a firearm.

The money will also go toward hiring at least one resource officer for each school well as the development of mental health programs and initiatives.

Scott, who said he was opposed to arming teachers and school staff, previously announced he would consult with the families of the victims before vetoing or signing the measure into law.

The bill has been an important political consideration for Scott, who is facing term limits as governor and is widely expected to challenge Florida's Democratic US senator, Bill Nelson, in November's midterm election.

Are you suprised by this move- not at all. The man is running for higher office.

This looks good, pretty balanced, not a bad start. Thanks Guv!
Abortion rights dogma can obscure human reason & harden the human heart so much that the same person who feels
empathy for animal suffering can lack compassion for unborn children who experience lethal violence and excruciating
    pain in abortion.

Unborn animals are protected in their nesting places, humans are not. To abort something is to end something
which has begun. To abort life is to end it.

I know it will not fully stop a determined killer. It's a start with common sense. Hopefully individual counties and cities will follow up with security measures (metal detectors, designated entrances & exits, etc.) and properly trained security officers.

There's already a 3 day waiting period. A waste of money for 'school shootings' which occur once a decade. Dumb, dumb dumb.

Florida is far from a red state, today. Is it better to pander to right wing kooks?

The second Amendment protects the rest.

    The racist right wins again.

They are putting guns in the hands of teachers.

400 million can buy a lot of book, build new schools and pay teachers more. Instead the racist right cons Americans again.

looks like they need 140 hours of instruction to conceal carry? that seems high.
Also the age was raised to 21, which I think is unconstititional as 18 is the age of majority

Nope. A firearms course is all that's needed for a cc permit.
