    Default California Weed Tax

A friend just posted her receipt on Facebook complaining about how much her taxes were on purchasing weed. I'm not a smoker so I was curious for those who do if 1) you think this tax amount is high and 2) at what tax level is it worth buying it 'illegally' and not paying the tax?

    Her bill was:

    Subtotal: $179.72
CA Sales and Use Tax 9.5% $17.08
    LA City Tax Adult-Use 10% $17.97
    CA Excise Tax 15% $26.96

    Total: $241.73

That is a hell of a lot of pot, unless CA growers are really screwing their customers (or potentially she could have bought a lot of edibles, but still... damn woman)

Those are pretty hefty taxes though. Not shocked given the shambles CA governments are in and how desperate they are for new tax streams.

It's funny, someone commented to her post saying "that's a lot of weed!" She responded: "not really, I smoke that or more a week..."

It seems like high taxes to me but I don't know what CO or WA charge so I don't really have a point of comparison

I guess that's the opportunity cost. At what point is risk less than paying the taxes.

In CO, it is 15% total at the state level. Localities may vary, but I haven't seen any that are close to bringing the total to 35%

Is that for half an ounce?

They'd have to lower the price a lot more .... to hurt the illegal market.

The illegal price is wide ranging, ... roughly around 100 - 250 for a half.

If she's smoking 2 oz. of premium weed per month ... that is pretty extreme. An ounce per month or less ... is reasonable.

    That's an important point.

I favor shutting down the black markets entirely. Put them out of business.

Precisely as Bd #7 suggests, that's best done economically, not with DEA agents rappelling in from helicopters.

Didn't Joseph Kennedy get his economic foothold by rum running during Prohibition?

Reductio ad absurdum. Then why not increase the tax to $one $Trillion $Dollars a gram? That's a high sin tax.

How much revenue do you think such a tax would generate?

Study the Laffer Curve. It's not a linear spectrum.

    ///////\\\\\\\\

Colorado might have gotten it approximately right. They seem to be gaining $millions in revenue, while simultaneously saving $millions on law enforcement costs of petty pot busts. That's a win / win / win for the tax payers, and a hatchet in the forehead to the illegal drug dealers.

To do that you would basically have to have the state selling good quality weed at the cheapest price. Is that possible?
