'Whatever you believe imprisons you.'' The right in America today has been taught and believes that government is unnecessary. Libertarians are the most naive concerning the belief. But beliefs manage the mind regardless of the consequences when the consequences are abstract and the society is stable enough to allow nonsense the pedestal. A Russian villager may think he lives in the freest nation in the world kinda like the right wing farmer in America who thinks the land is his to shat on. The books below explain the transformation of the American conservative into tools of big money for the interested reader.

    Good post, Midcan.

Just want to give one thing a bit more prominence:

I can only guess about this...but my guess is that it bothers you a lot.

You really ought to work on why it does.

Why would I want to work on something that you're only guessing at, Francis; because you apparently don't know, seeing as how you don't believe it does?

    Pure nonsense...
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

My name is not Francis...and you are correct. I don't believe it does.

Your problem seems to be that you are allowing me, and the fact that I do not do "believing", to bother you a great deal.

You ought to work on that in order to defeat the problem. Best not to let the problem defeat you.

It would be lost on you and thus lose its purpose.

Well...I personally think there is MUCH LESS DANGER from government going amok...or from our government becoming tyrannical…than there is from our citizens being unwilling to be governed.

I doubt any of us right now, except perhaps Donald Trump, wants a dictatorship; I doubt any of us, except perhaps Donald Trump, wants governmental tyranny.

But THE REAL DANGER RIGHT NOW IN AMERICA does not come from the danger of dictatorship, even with that dictator wanna-be in office...or serious governmental overreach. It comes, rather, from the fact that a significant minority of the people want not to be governed at all. They deplore government…the single most important ingredient in civilized society.

I suspect a lot of that absurdity was started during the first inaugural address by Ronald Reagan. As chief executive, he unwisely endorsed the notion of hatred of “being governed” with his (just about always, unfortunately, quoted out of context), “…government is not the solution to our problem; government is the problem.”

He was wrong…or at least, I sure as hell hope he was wrong, because if he was correct…democracy does not stand a chance of success. Democracy demands that government be a MAJOR FACTOR in the solution to problems…and there is no chance of democracy working if government truly is the problem.

And government requires that the people being governed...CONSENT TO BEING GOVERNED.

    Just sayin’!
You're naive, Frank. And none of those fascist dictatorship loving assholes who thanked you agree with a word you said. (Except for that part about Trump, of course).
Free speech is cool as long as it jibes with our program.

An American conservative calling anyone else "naive"...is like Donald Trump calling someone else "classless."

I'm sorry Frank, I just don't share your anti-American point of view.
