Exclamation Pro-Gun Russian Bots Flood Twitter After Parkland Shooting

Each new breaking news situation is an opportunity for trolls to grab attention, provoke emotions, and spread propaganda. The Russian government knows this. Fake-news manufacturing teenagers in Macedonia know this. Twitter bot creators know this. And thanks to data-gathering operations from groups like the Alliance for Securing Democracy and RoBhat Labs, the world knows this.

In the wake of Wednesday’s Parkland, Florida school shooting, which resulted in 17 deaths, troll and bot-tracking sites reported an immediate uptick in related tweets from political propaganda bots and Russia-linked Twitter accounts. Hamilton 68, a website created by Alliance for Securing Democracy, tracks Twitter activity from accounts it has identified as linked to Russian influence campaigns. As of morning, shooting-related terms dominated the site’s trending hashtags and topics, including Parkland, guncontrolnow, Florida, guncontrol, and Nikolas Cruz, the name of the alleged shooter. Popular trending topics among the bot network include shooter, NRA, shooting, Nikolas, Florida, and teacher.

    Alliance for Securing Democracy
Our Russia Fixation Is Devolving Into an Assault on Political Discourse
A new project by the German Marshall Fund claims to track the influence of foreign propaganda—but warps reality to accommodate an alarming new Russophobia.

The ASD, which according to a GMF spokesperson is “funded by a group of American private individuals and small family foundations,” is, in reality, an alliance between longtime Republican neocons and Democratic war hawks such as William Kristol, David Kramer, former CIA acting director Michael Morell, Hillary Clinton foreign-policy adviser Jake Sullivan and former US ambassador to Russia Michael McFaul.
    ....

How will it achieve this goal? By tracking 600 Twitter accounts which are said to be furthering Russian influence in the United States.

The specific criteria GMF uses when deeming an account “meaningfully linked” to Russian “disinformation campaigns” was left unstated. And GMF will not name the 600 accounts on its radar because, “We prefer to focus on the behavior of the overall network rather than get dragged into hundreds of individual debates over which troll fits which role.”

By following the activity of the 600 accounts, the GMF website is able to track the top and trending domains over a 48-hour period. So far, the site has listed mainstream news outlets like TheAtlantic.com and conservative sources like TheDailyCaller.com and FoxNews.com alongside Russian-funded outlets like RT.com and SputnikNews.com on its watch list.

The import of GMF’s project is clear: Reporting on anything that might put the United States in a bad light is now tantamount to spreading Russian propaganda.

Perhaps this shouldn’t be at all surprising. After all, the January 6 declassified intelligence report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence on Russia’s alleged campaign to influence the outcome of the election asserted that RT’s reporting on Occupy Wall Street and fracking helped tilt the election to Donald J. Trump.

The import of GMF’s project is clear: Reporting on anything that might put the US in a bad light is now tantamount to spreading Russian propaganda.

Projects like Hamilton 68 are the opposite of what one would expect in an open society like the United States: In essence, it seeks to police and narrow the scope of acceptable political discourse. The implicit message is that Americans should ignore unpleasant news so long as it comes from foreign outlets, regardless of the veracity of the story.

That the well-regarded German Marshall Fund has succumbed to the Russophobia now so in vogue across the political spectrum is cause for both sadness and concern.

The ASD might embrace the “Russian panic” and today’s project is “Reporting on anything that might put the US in a bad light is now tantamount to spreading Russian propaganda.” But tomorrows message will evolve into Reporting on anything that might put the US in a bad light will be tantamount to false, subversive, or seditious. Meanwhile, in far-off Ukraine

    15 February 2018
Russia was behind a devastating cyber attack on Ukraine’s banks, government and power grid, the Foreign Office has said.

Cyber experts at the National Cyber Security Centre say the GRU Russian military intelligence agency was almost certainly responsible for the NotPetya attack in June 2017.

The Foreign Office last night said the attack had masqueraded as criminal ransomware, but had in fact been a deliberate attack on the Ukrainian state.

The accusation against Russia comes after Gavin Williamson, the Defence Secretary, told The Daily Telegraph a Russian attack on Britain’s national infrastructure could kill thousands.

ROFL...of course "da Russians" -NOT plain old criminal ransomware.
    for what purpose?

    The Ukraine Crimea annexation is a done deal;
now it's the war in Donbass that pits Ukrainian militias against Russian separatists.

It's basically a border war. Kviv wants to extend it's authority east -Putin wants to keep Donbass a Russian speaking enclave with economic ties to Russia.

so..WHY would the FSU be interested in Ukraine's banks??
would not it be much more logical that the ransomware was just that and not some secret Russian plot?

    *It's more Russiaphobia on display*

Mr Williamson said last month that Russia was spying on British energy supplies with a view to disrupting them, possibly by cyber attack...That attack has been blamed on hackers linked to North Korea but it is Russia which Whitehall is most concerned about.
..WAPO published a similar claim that was debunked as fake news

Russian operation hacked a Vermont utility, showing risk to U.S. electrical grid security, officials say
Editor’s Note: An earlier version of this story incorrectly said that Russian hackers had penetrated the U.S. electric grid. Authorities say there is no indication of that so far. The computer at Burlington Electric that was hacked was not attached to the grid.

Putin had complained about US meddling -and I'm sure he blamed the Clinton who were behind the IMF loans that were uesd to campaign for Yeltsin
