Default Why less school shootings in the '70's?

Since we don't have enough gun threads on the board here's another one. As a percentage gun ownership was higher in the '70's so it's not like guns weren't around or available. We've had several people on this board mention kids would keep their rifles in the back of their trucks at school or people having pistols in their car wasn't uncommon during that time. So what changed?

Is it more violence in movies/tv shows/video games that desensitizes kids to violence? More mental health problems due to overmedicated kids and adults? 24/7 news channels? less religion? less kids with both parents raising them? social media?

I not asking this in a right/left political perspective for or against guns but more what happened that causes kids to do this today when they didn't back then.

There was nothing wrong with parenting in the 70's. You screwed up you got disciplined. Made better kids.

To answer your question with one word...publicity.
Common sense is not a gift, it's a punishment because you have to deal with everyone who doesn't have it.

Violence? How many school shootings in the 70's? Drug abuse was nothing compared to today. STD's? Might give you that one. Just means they had less frustration.

Yes, I’d suspect you’d have to back to the days of the greatest generation to find great parenting. But that type of parenting (teaching responsibility from a very young age, tough discipline, etc.) is nearly outlawed now. The respect (for life and for others as well as for authority) kids were once taught doesn’t exist in many circles anymore.

Continual downhill parenting, coddling, and lack of discipline. Hence the reason we are where we are now.

I was in school in the 70's, I remember school shootings happened, I guess not as often, but they were not mass murders, I think I know why, I think you do also.

I agree; but I would suggest that parenting has denigrated every decade, from the 50's

There's a meme going around on Facebook, that says:
I wasn't born with a silver spoon in my mouth, I was raised with a wooden spoon on my backside.

    Another one goes:
Before we learned to love our parents, we learned to fear them.

Now there are those that want to try and say that the "fear" must mean terrified of them and it doesn't.
What it does mean that we were afraid they would find out and then afraid of being punished.

There is truth to the old adage of:
This is going to hurt me, more then it hurts you (parent to child).
SEDITION: incitement of resistance to or insurrection against lawful authority.

I blame it on parents wanting to be their kid's "friend", instead of being their kid's "PARENT".
