iirc the "AR" in "AR-15" stands for "assault rifle".
It's only a name. But it is at least an indication of what its manufacturer had in mind.
The AR-15 iirc was quite similar to the M-16-A1, a genuine assault weapon, as it is capable of firing semi-auto, as well as auto (one trigger pull empties the magazine). I gather the AR-15 does not depart the manufacturer with auto-fire capability.
Though the AR may be available in a variety of bore diameters and cartridge configurations, many be standard .223
That's just a shade over .22 *
While the AR might be considered suitable for killing prairie dogs, it's probably more suited as a force multiplier for a human, against humans.
"No different"?
It's rate of fire, and magazine capacity make it an obvious choice for those planning mass murder.
And some might argue the AR is not a rifle at all, but a carbine.
