It seems if you look around at the world's peoples darker skin is the default.

It's hypothesized that populations of northern latitudes lost pigmentation since it's a barrier to Vitamin D production.

Darker skin is advantageous when it comes to sun exposure... even indigenous Arctic peoples are dark-skinned.

and in areas where sunlight is more scarce lighter skin that absorbs more sunlight may become a genetic advantage for natural selection
