Levashov's arrest drew immediate attention after his wife told Russia's RT broadcaster he was linked to America's 2016 election hacking.
RT quoted Maria Levashova as saying armed police stormed into their apartment in Barcelona overnight, keeping her and her friend locked in a room for two hours while they quizzed Levashov. She said that when she spoke with her husband on the phone from the police station, he told her he was told he had created a computer virus that was "linked to Trump's election win."

Spanish authorities have detained a Russian programmer at the request of FBI, Russian media reported Thursday. The detention comes after U.S. intelligence agencies found that Russian hackers were involved in the November 2016 cyberattacks that possibly influenced the presidential election in favor of Donald Trump.
The programmer has been identified as 31-year-old Stanislav Lisov, who was detained on Jan. 13 while he was vacationing with family in Spain. He reportedly works as a systems administration specialist and website developer for a local company in the southern Russian city of Taganrog.

Levashov, who denies all charges, faces a 52-year prison sentence in the United States. The Russian citizen has three days to appeal the extradition. He told the Spanish court that the U.S. would torture him for information because he worked for President Vladimir Putin’s United Russia party for the last decade.
“If I go to the U.S., I will die in a year. They want to get information of a military nature and about the United Russia party,” Russia’s RIA news agency reported he said. “I will be tortured, within a year I will be killed, or I will kill myself.”
Levashov’s first American indictment came over a decade ago on charges of email and wire fraud. In 2009, he was charged of operating the Storm botnet, a progenitor of Kelihos.
