Amazing how he didn't put tariffs on *that* stuff now, isn't it?

Not sure how it's hypocrisy he's been calling for a trade war and tariffs since basically the day he started running. Somehow we've been lucky he's done nothing to this point but now our luck has run out. But this this is sticking to his word, not hypocrisy

So.... let's get this straight. This hat

made in a foreign country where Trump has business ties is not hypocrisy?

    the OP:

Trump acted after the government's International Trade Commission "found that U.S. producers had been seriously injured by imports," said U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer.
the case for tariffs was filed at the International Trade Commission by two American firms that say their businesses have been crushed by cheap imports from Asia and Europe, which by now account for more than 90% of the solar panels installed in the U.S.

The trade commission voted last month 4-0 in favor of imposing tariffs. It said the action was needed to confront the near-extinction of an American industry.
sought relief through the filing of what is known as a "section 201" case.

That provision of the nation's trade law allows the president to broadly impose tariffs if the trade commission finds the move is needed to protect an American industry from economic peril.
so this isn't some rash Trump action. It came to him thru regular process..

Clearly I'm not very smart because I don't know what his hat has to do with a trade war or how he's supposed to help three companies which is going to ultimately cost thousands of jobs and raise prices. Bad bad economics. But it's what he's said he would do from day one.

Two businesses that lost to competitors. It happens. Now he's making policy to ostensibly help those companies but will cost thousands of jobs overall and raise prices. It's bad economics and there is nothing "maga" about it.

Section 201, as referred to in shorthand, is a section of the Trade Act of 1974 (P.L. 93-618) that permits the President to grant temporary import relief, by raising import duties or imposing nontariff barriers on goods entering the United States that injure or threaten to injure domestic industries producing like goods.

It's not going to cost thousands of jobs.. it's temporary injunctive relief ( or administrative relief) designed to give US industry a chance to compete.
For myself I would restrict it to evidence of dumping, but this is something allowed by GATT.

    1. if it helps US business elected adjust and become more competitive, it's a good policy.
    2. if it doesn't -it isn't

But it's not this cataclysmic event you are making it out to be. It's normal.

It's not normal and an event like this doesn't affect just one business. Read the OP again and the handful of other articles that have been written throughout the day. They all speak to what the overall consequences will be. A decision like this doesn't just happen in a vacuum. Other companies and countries will respond in kind.

Tariffs are losers for all but a select few.
