relying on Canada which is for all intents and purposes a vassal state is one thing. It would be like China relying on North kKorea for something. Relying on China is quite another.

It would be like Stalin relying on HItler for supplies.

The idea that tariffs are going to affect the automation of the coal mines is psychotic

Coal is a matter of national security for this country. Should something happen ( like WW III) a country wants to be able to rely on its natural assets for energy production, not ones that would cripple us should our current suppliers take side against us. It is not minimally needed nor antiquated. It is a valuable asset to this nation should it be needed.

Great. File it with fallout shelters. We are a net exporter of oil. At least, before Saudi Arabia opened the faucets for a year. In an emergency, we simply don't export petro products. Nat gas isn't going anywhere. Coal is a last resort, after the last resort.

We don't 'rely' on China for solar panels. Hell..Brewer opened up Arizona as a Chinese solar manufacturing hub. We buy from China because of the price. This is about pricing, not about any national concern for supply.

so if you buy from china because of price then you kill your own industry then you are reliant on your geopolitical opponent for energy.

Hitler did rely on Stalin for supplies until 1941. The Nazi war machine was fed with Soviet wheat and fuel.

EIA’s AEO2017 projects the United States to be a net energy exporter in most cases

EIA’s Annual Energy Outlook 2017 (AEO2017), released this morning presents updated projections for U.S. energy markets. This AEO is the first to have projections through 2050 in the AEO tables

I'm curious.... you wear shoes, right? Where are they manufactured? What about pants? Wear those? Where are they from? Shirts, jacket, underwear, socks, work-out gear? Seems to me if you're wearing clothing and shoes from foreign countries you should sit down and shuddup about buying energy-related products from the same sources.

    coal??

anyways it's a straightforward decision..allow cheaper panels ( and don't forget the washing machines covered too)
which is good for consumers, but at the same time cripple our manufacturing..

    I'm not a fan of tariffs..at all..
I think this is rank protectionism, and Trump is saving an industry. but at a cost.

For me it comes down to :
was there Chinese/Korean dumping or not? no dumping means no tariffs and vice versa

Just sit down and shut up while the multinationals rape our industrial capacity for cheap labor? Globalist scum.

The argument is about our country's security. It's one of the arguments for massive farm subsidies. Now I don't happen to buy that argument but it's why it's different than workout gear (although workout gear is important)

Solar panels don't have squat to do with "the nation's security" -- unless you realize that being free of the fluctuations in oil prices and the mercy of groups like OPEC is a good thing.

RWNJs just don't care for green energy; the stupider among them think that it's some sort of creeping socialist STD or something. Knowing the IQ level of his base, Trump knows he's fine with upping tariffs on something they see negatively. Betcha if he puts tariffs on big screen TVs and smart phones, they won't be so pleased with him.
