According to West Lafayette's WLFI, racist and profane banners were found at the Unitarian Universalist Church early Sunday. "West Lafayette has been and always will be an open and welcoming community".

The Orlando Police Department is "aware of this incident and has been in communication with police in West Lafayette, Indiana", police spokeswoman Michelle Guido said in a statement. Another banner reads, "Die [expletive]".

The second one also referenced singer-songwriter Jackson Browne, while the other included the date January 23 and the message "die Orlando just like Los Vegas".

Spokesperson Lt. Jonathan Eager said police are taking the threats seriously and have heightened security measures for the event as well as contacted the Federal Bureau of Investigation. They have also been in contact with law enforcement in Orlando.

Davis says his congregants sang civil rights tunes during the Sunday gathering that followed discovery of the signs.

The banners were hung just one day after the church hosted a "Resistance Fair", tied to the Women's March movement protests, and featured a voter registration drive.

"For the expansion of human rights - and a lot of the principals are under challenge right now, and so we're just going to have to continue to face up to that challenge and continue to promote the good", said Charlie Davis, a minister at the church.

"If they look beyond the headlines, they'll realize that West Lafayette is a safe place for all".

Eager said extra officers would be patrolling the neighborhood and church. It is still an active investigation, and anyone with information is asked to call WLPD at 765-775-5200.
