What's to refute? As you suggest, they don't really think past what they heard on the radio today. Shutdown is not in either side's interest. trump shut down the govt. and watched as the drama occupied what would otherwise be Mueller time on the news.

The best thing that came from this, is that trump didn't get to profit once again from being the stupidest POTUS in history. His $100,000/couple party had to go on without him.

No doubt the base is furious.

Liberal Activists Are Furious That Democrats “Caved” on the Shutdown
“Democrats caved on September 5th, they caved again on December 8th, they caved on December 22nd, and now they just caved again.”

“For a moment it felt like they were standing for us,” tweeted Erika Andiola, a former Bernie Sanders campaign staffer and a Dreamer.

On Monday, hours before a deal was announced, a broad coalition of left-leaning groups and labor unions, including MoveOn, the ACLU, the immigration-advocacy outfit America’s Voice, and the Resistance-hub Indivisible, announced a renewed effort to push Democrats to hold the line.

But the showdown soon ended with a whimper. Most of the Democratic caucus voted for the funding bill, though 16 members of the caucus, including some of the party’s most-touted possible 2020 presidential candidates, broke with their colleagues and voted to continue the filibuster. The dissenters included Sens. Cory Booker (D-N.J.), Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.), Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.), Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) “I don’t believe [McConnell] made any commitment whatsoever, and I think it would be foolhardy to believe he made a commitment,” Harris told reporters. If anyone in the Senate is listening carefully to the Democratic base these days, it’s those five.

In a statement, Progressive Change Campaign Committee co-founder Stephanie Taylor blasted “weak-kneed, right-of-center Democrats” for aiding Republican efforts to “hurt kids and tear families apart.” PCCC is an expected critic, but a deeper criticism came from Indivisible co-founder Ezra Levin, who said after the vote that “there need to be repercussions for selling out Dreamers and broadly selling out progressive policy priorities like this.” Levin’s organization’s how-to activism and ubiquity (it has chapters in every congressional district in the country) has helped ensure unanimous Democratic opposition to major legislation, such as tax cuts and Obamacare repeal.

“Democrats caved on September 5th, they caved again on December 8th, they caved on December 22nd, and now they just caved again,” he said, pointing out that Democrats have now repeatedly agreed to short-term funding measures that don’t protect Dreamers. “Their promise is they’re really going to fight hard next time. It’s totally unbelievable. The idea that they are gonna take a pinky-swear promise from Sen. McConnell after he’s broken so many promises before is political malpractice—it’s absurd to believe that. The only answer is that [they] aren’t actually interested in fighting for the Dreamers.”

The end of the shutdown, weeks away from the beginning of primary season and a special congressional election in Pennsylvania, could have ripple effects at the grassroots level. Levin relayed a conversation he’d had over the weekend with the leader of an Indivisible chapter in a hotly contested House district. “I was wondering, ‘What am I actually knocking on doors for if they just kept on caving?’” she told him. “‘But then when they actually stood and fought on the [funding bill], it made me want to fight a lot harder.’”

“What they’ve done is taken away some of that energy,” Levin said.

I'm not buying into the thought that a continued shutdown is in the best interests of the Democrats. What they 'caved' on, is 3 weeks. They've now shown that they simply won't be pushed around, after being shut out of every piece of failed legislation in the past year.

They were...rightly or not...going to get the lion's share of the blame for an extended shut down...facts notwithstanding. Now, they've highlighted McConnell's devious methods, and any failure to push through a meaningful immigration bill will be publicized.

Moot point, as the issue has always been the House. It empowers the Senate to manhandle Ryan.

And then the Debt Ceiling follows, good luck on getting any of the President's agenda thru in 2018, but the Administration probably know this, and are already planning to scapegoat the Democrats once again as the culprits. Difference then will be that the Democrats have the commitment McConnell made today to fall back on, the games have just begun
Truthfully, their agenda is already complete. trump doesn't care one bit about infrastructure unless he can funnel money into his own pockets. He got a disastrous tax giveaway passed, and he's got carte blanche to stack the courts with loons who will eventually push to essentially outlaw abortion.

Another painfully stupid claim with nothing but hyperbole to support it. Idiot.

Meanwhile, Obama's first two years with a Democratic majority in the House and Senate passed NOTHING to improve lives or infrastructure. Now all of a sudden, the lying leftist hypocrites want to make it an issue? Dumb.

    On the contrary, anchovies.

MoveOn.org is furious because Cryin' Chuck caved.

So are Nancy Peolosi and Kamala Harris. Maybe they were counting on illegal votes.

The propaganda arm of the DEMOCRAT Party admits the loss.

That's funny; you're too stupid to comprehend and plan and actually think that supporting Clinton was virtuous. Moron.

    Respectfully, I seriously disagree.

It could not be clearer that Trump and republicans have no intentions of saving the Dreamers. None.

Schumer just lost them 3 weeks, pushed them closer to the brink, and and gave up democratic leverage .. for what? Promises from people who don't keep promises.

Democrats were WINNING the shutdown argument.

This is familiar democratic weakness on display, and I guarantee this is not going over well with Dreamers.

Politico: Democrats get rolled in shutdown standoff

Senate Democrats shut the government down in hopes of striking a deal to shield 700,000 young immigrants from deportation. In the end, they got a promise of a vote — one that Republicans argue was going to happen, anyway.

Democrats lost the shutdown war. That much was obvious when they voted to re-open the government with little to show for it. They had vowed for weeks not to back any funding bill without a bipartisan agreement to protect so-called Dreamers. But as Washington entered day three of a government shutdown, Democrats folded, voting to reopen the government barely any closer to their goal.

    Republicans declared victory.

"We gave them nothing,” said House Republican Study Committee Chairman Mark Walker. “We’ve been able to get our message out as Republicans as a whole and be consistent and be united on this front."

Furious Progressives Slam Democrats For Caving On Shutdown

Just moments after Senate democrats reversed, and voted through a stopgap government funding bill - one which they rejected on Friday night forcing a brief, 3-day government shutdown, and which keeps the government running until February 8 - progressives started hammering Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer over his negotiating tactics and his agreement with Senate Republican leadership to end the government shutdown on Monday.

Even Nancy Pelosi has spoken out against the deal, saying there was no reason to support it: "I don’t see that there’s any reason – I’m speaking personally and hearing from my members – to support what was put forth," Pelosi said at a press briefing shortly before Schumer signaled Senate Democrats would agree to it.

    Progressive activists were much harsher.

“It’s official: Chuck Schumer is the worst negotiator in Washington – even worse than Trump,” said Murshed Zaheed, political director at CREDO, a progressive advocacy group, quoted by The Hill

“Any plan to protect Dreamers that relies on the word of serial liars like [Senate Majority Leader] Mitch McConnell [R-Ky.], [House Speaker] Paul Ryan [R-Wisc.] or Donald Trump is doomed to fail,” Zaheed added.

As described earlier, Schumer and McConnell brokered a deal to pass a continuing resolution to fund the government until Feb. 8 in exchange nothing but a vague promise for a compromise from Senate Republican leadership to hold a vote on DACA-replacement legislation by that date.

Activists were infuriated at the deal, as it includes no guarantees that a bill will pass — nor does it tie an immigration bill to a must-pass measure to give Democrats leverage. The agreement also includes no guarantees that a potential Senate agreement on DACA could see a vote in the House.

“Today's cave by Senate Democrats — led by weak-kneed, right-of-center Democrats — is why people don’t believe the Democratic Party stands for anything,” said Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of the Progressive Change Campaign Committee. “These weak Democrats hurt the party brand for everyone and make it harder to elect Democrats everywhere in 2018.”

"Illegal Immigrants, Democrats, Murder." An ad just released and sponsored by Trump.

Does that sound like a deal is forthcoming?

Liberals livid after deal to end shutdown
Activist groups were angry at how the negotiations turned out, with some calling it '#SchumerSellout.'

Liberal activists are furious with Democratic senators after most of them agreed to reopen the federal government without a firm path to shielding young immigrants from deportation.

As the third day of the shutdown dawned, liberal advocates and immigration groups fired off a joint statement blasting as "unacceptable" Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell's (R-Ky.) offer to merely hold a vote on immigration — with no promises for action from the House or White House — in exchange for Democratic votes to reopen the government. But three hours later, Democratic senators agreed to just those terms — sparking anger on the left.

"Millions of people flooded the streets of every major American city to stand up to Trump this weekend," tweeted Leah Greenberg, the co-executive director of the influential activist network Indivisible. "Your constituents want you to fight. How can you possibly not understand that?"

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer on Monday argued Democrats secured critical assurance for Dreamers, who are at risk for deportation as soon as March after President Donald Trump's decision to end the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program.

“We have a way to address the fate of the Dreamers, starting right now instead of waiting until March," Schumer said on the floor.

But activist groups that have provided his caucus crucial firepower during fights against GOP health care and tax bills were not buying that explanation.

Murshed Zaheed, political director of the liberal group CREDO Action, said Democrats' decision shows Schumer's willingness to betray progressives.

"Call it the #SchumerSellout," he said in an interview. "Hashtagged."

Ben Wikler, Washington director of MoveOn.org, slammed McConnell's offer to Democrats and lamented the minority's splintering over protecting Dreamers.

"What's clear from today's joke deal is that the grassroots movement demanding unity and courage has a lot of work to do to ensure that the whole Democratic caucus is ready to fight when the time comes," he said in an interview.

United We Dream executive director Cristina Jimenez, whose group has mobilized its grassroots to push for Dreamer protection, tweeted that "Dems failed to fight & use their leverage to protect immigrant youth. A false promise to vote on immigration from Rs is not a strategy to win. We won't be fooled. This vote means deportation."
