He got a commitment from the GOP that if the immigration issue isn't resolved by the end of the CR the Senate will hold an up and down vote on a clean DACA Bill. If that happens it will pass, moderate Republicans support it, and then when the House predictably tables the resolution, probably on orders from the White House, the Democrats will have the high ground and another issue to run on in 2018

In addition, now there is even more pressure on the GOP to come up with a bipartisan immigration bill, other wise, they own the failure

And the debt ceiling is due April, the President's inability to deal has pretty much sunk his 2018 agenda, if there ever really was one
