jan 17 2018 States should raise taxes on booze and lower the blood-alcohol content threshold to reduce drunk driving deaths across the nation, a government panel said Wednesday.

More than 10,000 people die every year in alcohol-related driving incidents, tragedies that are “entirely preventable” with a few changes to state law, according to a 489-page report by a panel of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.

Under current law, drivers face criminal charges if they get behind the wheel with a 0.08% blood alcohol content, which is considered legally impaired.

The National Academies panel recommends lowering that threshold to 0.05%. Utah adopted the new number, but it doesn’t go into effect until Dec. 30.

The 0.05% BAC for DUI is too low. That's not the problem area and makes a lot of non-criminals into criminals.

The 0.08% laws in most states is per se, which has nothing to do with impairment. It merely means that you are in violation of the law at that BAC

In America BAC is expressed in g/dL, hence the zero after the decimal point.
I knew a couple of people who got a DUI while living in Germany. Scared me shitless. One drink and I took a taxi if I didn't have someone drive me.

Among those with the largest vested $interest in that BAC spec. are bar owners and restauranteurs.

I'll be curious if they try to gather a coalition to fight this change.

Many restaurants run on thin margin. Their biggest $money $makers are the bar.
No stove, no oven, no fire-suppression equipment needed.
Just sell the bottle of beer they pay 70 cents for, for $4.75

In most cases it's their highest profit margin menu offering.

And the 0.05 BAC standard could cut severely into that most profitable aspect of their very competitive business.

It's hard to tell. I usually suspect such radical trolls of being POEseurs, but with TDK, there's kind of a ring of sincerity for some reason.

The ironic thing is, he posts some valid topics, then proceeds to ruin the discussion, lol.

As far as the topic goes, .05 is just plain ridiculous. Even .08 is too low. Might as well just reinstitute prohibition, and an absolute police state. There was nothing out of line with .1.
