The question of who controlled the various big cities across the country did peak my curiosity.

The last Republican Mayors of these cities served in:

Atlanta - 1879
Boston - 1930
Chicago - 1931
Philadelphia - 1948
Detroit - 1962
San Francisco - 1964
Baltimore - 1967
Oakland - 1977

Now I didn't get into the City Counsels of each of these cities but I don't think it a stretch to believe they are Democratic dominated as well. Having grown up in Oakland and living in San Francisco I don't believe a Republican has ever run for a City Counsel position, let alone held one since I've lived here for 30 years.

So for better or worse (or both) Democrats have politically controlled many of the big cities of this country for a number of years.

Most cities are not in states where the political leanings of just about everyone is as predictable as California, and even out there, you'd have to have some kind of official record to really arrive at an informed conclusion.

But as for all the other "Democrat run" cities, it is impossible to make the determination as to the majority political make up of the City Councils/Commissions because people elect them based on local issues. Where I live, we've had both Republican and Democrat Mayors over the past few decades, and the City Council members have been all over the map.

I think that's the way it is with most cities, especially in the Midwest and on the East Coast.

San Francisco and Oakland aren't uninformed assumptions. I know from living here.

Detroit is a City that's 82% black. We know the Republican Party doesn't exactly do all that well with black voters so the chance of Detroit electing multiple black Republicans to their City Counsels is about zero. Baltimore isn't all that different.

BAC could speak to City Counsels in Atlanta.

Not all City's have one party rule of course. But of the big one's I listed those are most definitely Democratic dominated. And this is not new that Democrats dominate urban areas and Republicans more the rural areas and a number of suburbs. That's not a partisan thing to say.
