Default Trump, Vladimir Putin hold phone call on North Korea, Syria, other security issues

WASHINGTON – President Trump spoke with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin by phone for more than an hour Tuesday about a range of national security issues, including ways to resolve the Syrian civil war and pressure North Korea into giving up nuclear weapons.

”We had a great call with President Putin," Trump told reporters at the White House. "We're talking about peace in Syria – very important – we’re talking about North Korea. We had a call that lasted almost an hour and a half."
The call came less than two weeks after Trump and Putin met on the sidelines of an Asia-Pacific economic conference in Da Nang, Vietnam. T
hose talks were part of an Asia trip in which Trump tried to persuade Russia, China, and other countries to tighten the diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea.

In a readout of their latest phone conversation, the White House said in a statement that Trump and Putin discussed
"the need to continue international pressure on North Korea to halt its nuclear weapon and missile programs."

The presidents also agreed to pursue plans "to peacefully resolve the Syrian civil war, end the humanitarian crisis, allow displaced Syrians to return home, and ensure the stability of a unified Syria free of malign intervention and terrorist safe havens,"
    the White House statement said.

Prior to the phone call, Putin said he planned to speak with Trump as part of a Russian effort to seek a peace deal in Syria. Syrian leader Bashar al-Assad made a surprise visit to Russia this week for negotiations.

Russia, Iran and Turkey – all of which have backed Assad's forces – have authored a peace initiatives in an effort to resolve the Syrian civil war that has been raging since 2011.

Putin has also scheduled talks with the leaders of Turkey and Iran to discuss the way forward in Syria.

On the phone call, the U.S. and Russian presidents also discussed Trump's criticism of the Iranian nuclear deal, unrest in Ukraine, and counter-terrorism efforts in Afghanistan, according to a statement from the Kremlin.

"The two presidents affirmed the importance of fighting terrorism together throughout the Middle East and Central Asia and agreed to explore ways to further cooperate in the fight against ISIS, al-Qaeda, the Taliban, and other terrorist organizations,"
    the White House said.

After chatting with Russia's leader in Vietnam, Trump made waves by saying he believed Putin was sincere in denying any effort to influence the 2016 presidential election.

    awesome.
They are talking about all the hot spots, including Donbas..
Crimea is settled Russian but Trump should get something for that though he can't deal with sanctions

Putin leads on Syria -3 way talks between Iran/Turkey/Putin tomorrow.
Putin met with Assad today and pledged the Syrian people will decide on regime change ( or not)

    excellent work..stay engaged -
the relationship has too many critical points to deal with to be distracted by sanctions

What is especially good is Putin seems to be coming around on NK. I think he'll follow China's lead.

Trump has said privately that he considers Syria to be Obama’s failure and that he sees little the U.S. can do about it now
That view was reflected in Trump’s decision earlier this year to cancel a covert CIA program that armed moderate Syrian rebels fighting Assad’s regime.

But Trump has at least one major unmet goal in Syria: rolling back the influence of Iran, which partnered with Russia to defend Assad.

“Iran is not going to be in charge, and Iran is not going to have any sort of leadership in that situation to where they can do more harm,” Trump’s United Nations Ambassador Nikki Haley said of the country in September.

Trump has not managed thus far to drive Moscow and Tehran apart, however. A White House readout of his Tuesday call with Putin made no mention of Iran, while a Kremlin readout only affirmed Putin’s support for the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which Trump has threatened to sabotage.

A more detailed joint statement on Syria issued by the U.S. and Russia after Trump and Putin met at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in Vietnam Nov. 11 also made no mention of Iranian influence.

With little ability to shape the Syrian battlefield, Trump officials have been working with the Russians on narrow goals like brokering local ceasefires meant to gradually diminish violence in the country.

But Putin’s large military presence on the ground in Syria — where he dispatched troops and air power in September 2015 — has put him in the diplomatic driver’s seat when it comes to planning Syria’s future once the fighting stops.

Putin also spoke Tuesday about Syria with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Saudi King Salman, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Qatar’s foreign minister.

“It’s become quite clear that the Assad-Putin-Iran gambit has almost completely won in Syria,” said Paul Salem, senior vice president at the Middle East Institute. The Russians “want to show their relevance and influence beyond the military phase” and broker a political settlement, he added.

Putin still needs U.S. buy-in to any Syrian peace process, regional experts said.
The Russian leader doesn’t want to be saddled with the economic, political or security responsibilities of holding the country together.

With the Syrian government controlling most of the country and Islamic State fighter in disarray Putin told Assad at the Monday meeting that Moscow is about to curtail its military presence there.
(so much for that "quagmire" Obama warned about)

“Regarding our joint operation to fight terrorists in Syria, this military operation is indeed coming to an end,” he told Assad in televised remarks. “I’m pleased to see your willingness to work with everyone who wants peace and settlement.”
The meeting came two days after Syrian troops and their allies captured the eastern town of Boukamal, the last major inhabited area held by the IS group in Syria. Syrian troops and their Iran-backed allies marched into the town under the cover of Russian airstrikes.

Iran and Russia have been Assad’s main backers while Turkey supports the opposition.

Trump halts the Obama era CIA support of Syrian rebels/jihadists in July, and by November, ISIS is routed to such an extent Vladie Boy decides he doesn’t need to be in Syria anymore.

Not bad for an idiot who doesn’t know what he’s doing lol.
Coup has started. First of many steps. Impeachment will follow ultimately~WB attorney Mark Zaid, January 2017
