My parents were from the Grand Rapids area. We drove up every single year, till I moved out at age 19, to visit the grands. I wish I could say that I have happy memories of the place but I don't. In the 60s and early 70s it was like most industrial American cities -- filthy, smog- and crime-ridden, and smelly n uglier than roadkill in July.

My husband informs me that GR has had quite a renaissance and is a tech hub as well. So we're thinking of driving down next summer and spending a few days visiting. What would you recommend for us, to not miss and to avoid? I'm willing to give her another look.

Ah. So the "right political vision" means making fun of and hating on the people living in the states you don't approve of. Got it. Think we been there, seen that, got that brown shirt.

Top notch school, as far as I could tell. I was just a little stressed out about being so far from the ocean!

Oh I can see that for sure. That part of Illinois is just a corn and soybean wasteland. He escaped as soon as he could too!

Yeah ironic post. It’s reactionaries like Boris who want to return our nation back to a European feudal Aristocracy.

You would have only been an hour away from Lake Michigan! The whole grea Lakes region is one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Often exceeding either coast in beauty. These may seem like bold words but are non the less true but a drive across rt. 2 in Wisconsin puts the PCH to shame we’re scenic beauty is concerned.

Well if you just drive through on the highway sure but there’s plenty of Woodlands and river valleys that might change your perspective if you get off the danged highway.

I often hear coastal folks belittle the Midwest and Sure it’s not exactly the most awe inspiring scenery in the agricultural intensive regions but it’s also some of the finest land in the world which explains why the Great Lakes Region is the second largest population center in the nation and produces more economically, culturally, industrially, scientifically and technologically than the Pacific Coast region does which comes as quite a surprise to people who haven’t studied technology transfer and many don’t realize that the population of the Great Lakes region is comparable to the North East region and is significantly larger than the Pacific Coast region.
