Father Ignatius Kury of Akron entered a not guilty plea Friday to a charge of O.V.I. and asked a Kent Municipal Court Judge for permission to enter a rehabilitation facility in Maryland.
The pastor of Holy Ghost Ukrainian Catholic Church in Akron was arrested by Brimfield Township police late Sunday.
Officers say they found Kury, 35, lying down in the back seat of his car which had run off the side of the road at the intersection of Meloy and Sandylake Roads.
Brimfield Township Police Chief David Blough told Fox 8 News Kury tested three times the legal limit at the time.
He was taken to the police department where officers say his behavior became so dramatic that they handcuffed him inside the cell and decided to record his profanity-laced rant on video.
In the recording, Fr. Kury is heard shouting curse words at officers.
Kury is heard saying, "I'll give you a sermon on the mount."
According to Chief Blough, the priest's rant lasted more than 20 minutes, during which he threatened and propositioned officers. Kury is heard saying, "I'll pay you whatever you want. What do you want? Want me to give you a [expletive]? Is that what you want? Do you want me to be a sexual slave?"
On Friday, the priest's attorney, Walter Benson, told Fox 8, "The police are saying he was extremely intoxicated, and if you watch the video that is quite apparent."
"It should not be a surprise to anyone that someone who is extremely intoxicated would say or do inappropriate things," Benson added.
Benson represented Kury in court on Friday, asking a municipal court judge to allow the priest to enter a rehabilitation facility in Maryland.
"I just want people to know that [Kury's conduct on the tape] does not take away from all the wonderful things that he has done for this community and in other places. He has helped grow his parish, counseled people who have lost loved ones, is a community service award winner and has been a tutor for special needs students," said Benson.
