97-year-old kneels in solidarity with NFL protests, calls Trump ‘garbage-mouthed’
‘Those kids have every right to protest.’That’s what John Middlemas, a 97-year-old World War II vet and Missouri farmer, had to say about the commotion spreading across the gridiron on Sunday.

Middlemas was one of many supporters showing solidarity with the players who opted to take a knee during the national anthem, a move President Donald Trump said on Friday is grounds for dismissal.
His grandson, Brennan Gilmore, captured Middlemas’s gesture and posted it on Twitter. From there, the internet took over and made it a viral phenomenon, with an incredible 255,000+ people “liking” it.

My grandpa is a 97 year-old WWII vet & Missouri farmer who wanted to join w/ those who #TakeaKnee: "those kids have every right to protest."
Gilmore, in another tweet, said Middlemas has long been an ally to the civil rights movement: “He’s an amazing man always on the side of justice.”
Ex-49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, who still doesn’t have a job in the NFL, started the kneeling tradition back in 2016 to protest police violence against African Americans. In the face of strong rebukes from Trump, more and more players — and owners — have joined in the demonstrations.
As for Middlemas, he told the Springfield News-Leader he just wanted to tell his family and “the whole world” that “you have to love everybody.”
And his thoughts on Trump? Well, he’s “garbage-mouthed.”
So maybe not everybody.
