Default Rightwing AfD make historic breakthrough in German elections

This year’s election is set to go down in history as the moment Germany’s most successful rightwing party since the second world war stormed into parliament.

BERLIN —*German Chancellor Angela Merkel was on course to claim a fourth term in office Sunday even as the far right was set to earn seats in Parliament for the first time in more than half a century, according to projected results released by German broadcasters Sunday after a nationwide vote.

The results, if confirmed, represent an affirmation of Merkel’s emphasis on Germany’s stability and economic prosperity at a time of upheaval elsewhere around the globe. They clear the way for her to extend her 12-year stewardship to 16, which would tie the record for postwar Germany.

Merkel in Front, SPD Collapses, AfD Wins Seats
Angela Merkel appears to have won her fourth term as German chancellor, but her coalition partners for the last four years, the Social Democrats, have likely received their worst result since World War II. The right-wing populist AfD has secured more than 13 percent of the vote.

For those that don't understand the AfD is far right, the FDP is the equivalent of our Libertarian Party, the CDU equivalent of Republican Party and the SPD the equivalent of the Democratic Party.

the Social Democratic Party (SPD) to have achieved its worst result ever with just 20% of the vote, while Alternative for Germany (AfD)—who were previously unrepresented in the Bundestag—have taken 13% of the vote.[1]

The CDU/CSU successfully negotiated with the Social Democrats (SPD) to form a grand coalition for the third time.[2]https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_federal_election,_2017

The most likely coalition is CDU - Green - FDP. The SDP is going into opposition.

Comparing the CDU to the Republicans is a bit iffy (especially in the current era where the Republicans are fairly radical could better be compared to a far-right party like the Polish PiS

The Republicans are the AFD, the Democrats are the CDU, the FDP is much more moderate than the Libertarians, and their Greens are too the right of ours.
