NFL needs to take care of it's problem before the league collapses. That would be a big hole in the economy and huge debts unpayable as a result.

Insane Level of Addiction
As with most things ultimately the market will decide. People can vote with their pocketbook and their eyeballs if they choose to watch or support the NFL.
Sports, and the NFL in particular, are very ingrained in our society. Ironically it used to be one topic of discussion that brought people from all walks of life together. Now like many other topics it's a hot button and divisive issue.
